I am Anya and I'm the owner of The Quirky Stitch. I was born and raised in Russia. I learnt many different crafts during my school age from my grandmothers and later from the Art School that I  attended after school. My nannie taught me crocheting at age around 7 as I remember. I was crocheting a long rope of basic loops and then roll them into a ball. This was used as rope to close the potato bags that we keep under the ground during the cold winter days. This was my first introduction to the wonderful world of craft. :-)

Since my early childhood years I've been interested in many different crafts (i.e. crocheting, cross-stitch, scrapbooking, macramé, knitting, appliqueing, stitching and sewing of course!). Craft became my passion and I appreciate and treasure it.

At The Quirky Stitch I source beautiful patchwork fabrics so that you can make timeless eye-catching projects every time. Here I share my knowledge and experience, I offer friendly advice and reliable service. I use my skills, knowledge and experience to assist you to create perfect treasures; from quilts, wall-hangings, cushions, table-runners, to many other bits and pieces.

The Quirky Stitch is a crafters and quilters online home - based store and mobile shop of designer brand patchwork fabrics, notions, quirky patterns and kits. It is located in the Swan Valley, Perth. You are very welcome to make an appointment and visit my home-based store. I am extending my service by offering to visit you at your location or group gathering. I welcome your call, message or email to arrange a convenient day and time.

The Quirky Stitch offers small group classes and workshops. Please keep an eye on my Facebook page or your Inbox for updates. Please let me know of any techniques or skills you are interested in learning (it does not matter if you  machine or hand stitch I am here to guide and help). There is a lot to learn in patchwork and quilting … We are so blessed to have the passion, love and skills to be involved in this wonderful world of creations.

I invite you to browse through my store at your own pace to find the perfect fabric or inspiring pattern for your next project. I am happy to offer FREE POSTAGE on all online orders for delivery within Australia when you are purchasing over $50 value in one transaction.

Welcome to the wonderful world of The Quirky Stitch.

Hi <<First Name>>,
Have you thought about taking on one of the vacant positions for the Committee? I'm sure there is some job that could use your talents and skills. A number of positions will become vacant at the AGM and now is the time to think about it and possibly work with the person who has the job to see what it is they do. Todays spotlight is on WEBSITE AUTHOR and MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY.

Have you ever wondered who puts out the tables and chairs so you and your friends can relax and sew at sewing day and sewing night? Who puts everything away? Find out. One prize at sewing night and one prize at sewing day for the first person who thanks the right people.  We should always remember to thank our hard working volunteers..

Interesting happenings around the web this month. Seems as if everyone is needing permission to make changes in their lives.

Windy Chien wrote an excellent blog post on giving yourself permission to be artistic and Gnome Angel looks at life changes. So interesting.

More about permission. Susan Carlson wrote an excellent piece about copyright. Well worth a read.

The exhibition at the Perth Library by WA Inspired was a thing of beauty. I was very proud to say I knew the artists! They have more at the Mundaring Arts Centre in Gallery 1 from 5th May - 18th June.

Caroline Konig is our guest at sewing night this month. She specialises in reproduction quilt design and fabrics. Don't miss her trunk show.

QUILTWEST with Jenni Anning

We are in the last few weeks of preparation for QuiltWest.  Drop off information for entrants has been emailed last week and white glove tickets will be mailed this week.
Entry tickets will be on sale at both Sewing Day and Sewing Night this year as the exhibition is a week later.
We have some gaps on the white glove roster on Thursday and Saturday so if you are able to help on those days please let me know.
  • Raffle ticket stubs and funds need to be returned to Maria Ikier, Trish Yensch or myself as soon as possible after being sold.  Any unsold books must also be returned as we are required to account for all books issued.  Please try and get them back to us by Sewing Day or Night.  If returning by mail please don’t send cash; cheques to be payable to WAQA QuiltWest and address mail to:

  • Helpers for set up on Monday and Tuesday please note the following:
    • Closed in shoes and hi-vis vests are required to be worn at all times on these days.  The QuiltWest vests will be in a crate at the entry desk outside pavilion 5, but if you have your own please bring it.
    • Monday start time for setup of frames in 11.00am.
    • Tuesday start time for setup of all displays in 9.00am
  • Lockable Room Access:  This will only be available to the QuiltWest Committee and the WAQA Management Committee and NOT to the general membership.  This will be on set up days as well as during the actual exhibition (except for the Award Winners Morning Tea).  It has been put in place due to items of value disappearing over both the last two years.  If there is a particular reason you feel you need access for storage of valuable items please make arrangements with me in advance so I can include your name on the list.
Please DO NOT bring valuables with you that you are unable to keep with you or on your person when setting up.During the exhibition someone will be present at the white glove table if members choose to leave a bag there whilst on white glove duty.
It is with regret that I will need to take a step back from the QuiltWest convenorship next year due to health concerns, but will still be involved in some smaller way.
Cassie Collins will be taking on the role of QuiltWest Convenor, but we are looking for someone who would like to learn the role under her stewardship.  We have created the position of Assistant Convenor for this and we will provide plenty of training.  Please be aware that both Cassie and I work days so meetings will continue to be held on Sewing Nights.
Additional committee members will also be required for other roles next year, due to some departures after a few years on committee so if you are interested in learning and helping create the great exhibition we have, please contact me on
We would also like to hear from any group that might be interested in creating the raffle quilt top for next year’s exhibition.  We will be supporting Breast Cancer Care WA next year.

Challenge Theme 2017 – Inspired by a Quotation
It is up to you how you interpret the theme Inspired by a Quotation and the techniques you use – anything goes! The only requirement is the size, maximum 50cm x 70cm. The deadline is a comfortable 31 October.
For more information, contact Meg Cowey at or phone 93357119.
I will not be seeking re-election at the AGM in October, so WAQA will need a new person for the membership job.
It has been an enjoyable position. I have talked with and learnt the names of many of our members. I have met lots of lovely quilters and been privileged to work with many of them on the Management Committee.
It is quite a demanding position and there are some busy periods during the year  -- for example during the three months from September when membership renewals are due.
If you are at all interested, give me a call on 0438 941 517 or email me at   and we can discuss the details.

New Website Author
Our facebook and website author is stepping down after five happy years on the job and needs to find a replacement.
You do not need to be an IT expert. If you enjoy playing around on the internet and with social media you will have enough skills to manage the waqa website. Phil is happy to work with the new author over a transitional period.
If interested contact Phil on waqacoevents@gmail .com
