WHS Unit Changes

It is with sadness that we inform you of two recent resignations from the WHS Unit:

Melinda Chylinski has taken up a role in Canberra. Melinda has been a much valued team member during her time with the WHS Unit and I’m sure she will be missed by not just her WHS and HR peers but also the many contacts she has developed throughout the University. Melinda’s final day at UOW was 8 March.
Daniel Leo has taken up a role with SafeWork NSW. Daniel has been a long standing member of the WHS Unit as well as secondment opportunities in QA and SSD. His skills in a wide range of WHS topics (too many to list) and passion for improving workplace safety will be greatly missed and very hard to replace.  Daniel’s final day at UOW was 22 March 2019.

Dannielle McCoy has increased to 5 days to support WHS Advisor Kristy Adams. Tony Bate has also returned to the Unit to assist.

Please be patient with the team while formal recruitment for Melinda and Daniel's replacements takes place.

Thermalaire Heater Alert

A heater recently failed an inspection with a section of the plastic housing had decomposed and broken away exposing the internal electrical wires.
It is recommend that if you have a Thermalaire heater you should check and inspect to identify any faults.

2019 Vice-Chancellor's Awards

The Vice-Chancellor's Awards aim to encourage and recognise exceptional performance from University staff members who demonstrate outstanding achievement in activities that are aligned to the University's vision and strategic goals.

The awards also support the University's values of a workforce with strong performance expectations, recognition and celebration of initiative and enterprise, and staff who are recognised and appreciated for their contribution.

The Vice-Chancellor's Award Guideline has recently been updated and provide an overview of each of the award categories, nomination and committee selection process. Specific award criteria, nomination forms and relevant dates are available via the links above.

Nominations will open 22 March 2019 and close 24 May 2019.

If you would like more information on the Vice-Chancellor's Awards please contact pods@uow.edu.au.

HIR Close-Out Success

95% of corrective actions from hazard and incidents reported in July-December 2018 have been closed. Currently, we are sitting at 85% for January-February 2019.

Supervisors receiving short-files to authorise should endeavour to do so in a timely manner as this will trigger corrective actions to be sent to the responsible person.

Slips, Trips and Falls

As we move into autumn and winter, the ground can become more slippery. Report any issues to FMD including leaf litter building up and mossy or raised pavers. Keep yourself safe by watching your footing, holding onto handrails and not using phones while going up or down stairs.
