Public Realm Strategy
Galway City Council is preparing a Public Realm Strategy to guide the development, enhancement, management and use of streets and public spaces.
You are invited to an important roundtable discussion regarding streets and public spaces in the city on Friday 1 February, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm at The Mick Lally Theatre, Druid Lane, Galway. The workshop is being run by the Galway City Council Planning Department and will include a walking audit and workshop for you to demonstrate the strengths, issues and potential of city centre streets and public spaces.

Consultation on a new National Strategy on Volunteering
Galway Volunteer Centre are hosting a consultation workshop on Wednesday January 30th to get the views and suggestions of organisations that involve volunteers on what should be in such a strategy. A number of topics will be discussed on the evening. Galway City Community Network encourages members to attend as the GCCN submission will also consider this consultation.

The Department of Rural and Community Development are in the initial stages of developing a strategy for volunteering. The Dept has issued a ‘Call for Input’ (CFI) to inform and seek views from stakeholders on key topics under consideration to develop the National Strategy on Volunteering (the Strategy).
The purpose of this document is to:
- Inform stakeholders of the proposed volunteering strategy;
- Seek views from stakeholders on what constitutes volunteering;
- Invite comments and proposals on the CFI including additional and emerging considerations which may further inform the Strategy.
The outcome of this CFI and potentially the input from a proposed National Advisory Group will inform the Department’s development of this volunteering strategy.
If you would like to contribute your views on volunteering, please download the Submission Form. The closing date for submissions is 3pm on Thursday, 14 February 2019. Submissions received after this time and date will not be considered. Only submissions made on the Submission Form will be considered
To return a submission electronically, please download the Submission Form and send your completed submission to volunteer@drcd.gov.ie in Word.doc format. Please note that returning the submissions in this format is required to facilitate the collation of information. If you wish, you may also return your submission in PDF format and Word.doc format. The subject line of your submission should read ‘Volunteering CFI Submission.’

Galway 2020 Volunteer Recruitment Launch
Galway 2020 volunteer recruitment is starting on the 16 February 2019 with the launch of the Wave Makers Programme in Tribeton,  Merchants Road, Galway from 3pm to 6pm. The event will feature: Finger food will be provided

SDG advocate programmeDevelopment Perspectives are currently recruiting for their SDG advocate programme, the SDG Advocate programme offers 26 active citizens an opportunity to represent their community, by becoming one of Ireland’s positive changemakers. The 8month training course will allow the advocates to deepen their understanding of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals, represent the project internationally and lead transformative change in Ireland. We are looking for community activists, change makers and global thinkers to apply for the chance to take part by February 19th. The chosen participants will travel to Vietnam or Tanzania for 2 weeks during summer 2019. The work/study visit affords an invaluable chance to experience first-hand perspectives and challenges that people face in a different global context.
This part-time educational programme and life-changing opportunity is one element of a larger project called the #SDGchallenge which was awarded the Dóchas 2017 SDG Champion Award, an award designed to recognise an organisation that has done outstanding work around the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals and was a finalist in the 2018 UN SDG Action Awards, designed to recognise outstanding achievements and innovative efforts to promote action on the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment now invites parties to register their interest in attending the third meeting of the National SDG Stakeholder Forum.
This is a free ticketed event with limited capacity so we would ask that anyone interested in attending register without delay.
When: 9.30 - 5.30, Thursday 31st January 2019
Where: Main Conference Centre, Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2
At the Forum we hope to have representatives from across various networks, and Government departments and interested parties to explore how we can work together to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
Following feedback and discussion from our previous Forum, this year we are introducing a new approach.
There will be a presentation by the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment on the new Climate Action Plan, followed by a question and answer session with senior Departmental officials dealing with climate change. We have engaged facilitators for all sessions including the breakout sessions in the afternoon. A report and final conclusions from the breakout sessions will be published within two weeks of the Forum. View the full agenda here.
When you register, we will ask you to indicate your relevant sector (individual, business, civil society, NGO, Government, media, academia, or other) for statistical purposes. You will also be asked to indicate your dietary preference for catering purposes.

Community Water Development Fund 2019
The Local Authority Waters Programme have announced the launch of an open call for applications to a Community Water Development Fund 2019. Closing date for receipt of applications is Tuesday 12th February 2019 at 7.00pm.
The Community Water Development Fund aims to support communities in progressing water related projects and initiatives, delivering benefits locally whilst also helping to meet the objectives of the River Basin Management Plan for Ireland and the wider EU Water Framework Directive. This fund is open to all community and voluntary groups to assist in the protection and management of water quality, both locally and in the wider catchment. This can include the development of a catchment partnership or River/Lake Trust, and delivery of local projects to protect and improve water quality in a local waterbody. This fund will enable communities to get more involved in the management of their local water environment, delivering multiple benefits for present and future generations. The fund is administered by the Local Authority Waters Programme on behalf of the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government.
Types of projects considered will include:
- Capital projects such as restoration/habitat conservation/natural flood mitigation measures.
- Projects that promote public awareness/education and events such as biodiversity days, surveys, training workshops, surveys and plans, etc.
- General amenity such as beach clean, improving amenity areas, bird watching facilities, etc.
Grants awarded will range from up to €5,000; up to €10,000 and up to €25,000. The fund is capped at €180,000 for 2019.
