GCCN Plenary Follow-up


The second Plenary of 2019 took place on Wednesday, June 26th at 6.30pm in the Menlo Park Hotel, Galway. 
30 GCCN member organisations were represented at the meeting by over 40 participants in total. Great attendance also from the new groups that joined the Network recently.

Swans at CladdaghThe invitation to all the New Galway City Councillors, extended by GCCN in the previous weeks, was accepted by Owen Hanley (SD), Frank Fahy (FG), Martina O’Connor (GP) and Colette Connolly (Ind) who joined the discussions from 8pm.

Apologies were received from Pauline O’Reilly (GP), Declan McDonnell (Ind), Terry O’Flaherty (Ind), Niall McNelis (LP), Michael Crowe (FF), Mike Cubbard (Ind) and Eddie Hoare (FG).

Among other matters, the meeting also discussed the process for nominating and electing the new GCCN Reps - elections to be held during the September Plenary. Further info on this will be provided during Curry and Conversations, an open meeting to be held on 2nd July from 6pm in the Westside Resource Center. For more info check this post.

Baboró Game Design Workshop
Free spaces for girls and boys
 
Baboró International Arts Festival for Children is hosting two special Game Design Workshops with Romero Games. 30 free places have been reserved for girls and boys (aged 10 to 12yrs) that connect with a Resource Centre or come from a disadvantaged area of Galway City or County.
When: Saturday 29th June
Where: The Connacht Hotel, Galway

Workshop Times:
#1 (Girls): 8.30am - 1.30pm
#2 (Girls & Boys): 2.30pm - 7.30pm
The first workshop is a girls-only workshop to encourage girls' interest in tech and design while the second workshop is open to both girls and boys.
The content of both workshops is exactly the same (including artwork as well as digital work) and they will be facilitated by award-winning Game Designer Brenda Romero and her team from Romero Games.

Seven Castles Looped Cycle Heritage Tour
Bike Week Event

This year’s Bike Week sees the return of the Seven Castles Looped Cycle Heritage Tour to Galway.
Also known as ‘Slí na gCaisleán’ (‘The Way of the Castles’) the event represents a guided off-the-beaten-track heritage cycle excursion along a looped trail across beautiful countryside that encompasses seven castles on the north and eastern side of Galway city and on into Galway county.


When:  Sunday, June 30th, from 9.30am

Where: ‘Plots’ Sports-Field, Dyke Road

 
The tour, organised by the Ballinfoile Mór Community Organic Garden, will start at 9.30am on Sunday, June 30th from the ‘Plots’ on the Dyke Road which was the site of former urban allotments in decades gone by, then onto Terryland Castle before undertaking a forty km looped cycle route that has castles at Menlo, Cloonacauneen, Killeen, Ballybrit, Castlegar and Ballindooley.

This leisurely cycle will journey over hills, along botharins, past abandoned farms, ruined castles, karst outcrops, bogs, lakes, dykes, turloughs and meadows.

Local communities are hoping that it will become part of a new cycling friendly network that could benefit the quality of life of Galwegians as well as become a major green tourism attraction.
 
Note: Participants should bring along their own bicycle, suitable clothing and packed lunch. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Let’s Tandem Cycle Together
Galway Visually Impaired Activity Club

Galway Visually Impaired Activity Club are hosting a tandem bike event this Sunday the 30th of June, at the Clybaun Hotel. Join them for some fun!

Would you like to share your insight into the impact of rising insurance costs on the average community group?
PPNs across Ireland have been hearing about the growing financial burden that rising insurance is having on the work of community groups and activities across the country.
In order to respond on your behalf, we need to know the facts and have evidence about how this is affecting your work.
 
This survey is anonymous though excerpts from what you tell us will be shared to help inform a national response around insurance issues.
