Community Opportunities

Service Learning Opportunity
Business Analytics Students - Exchange

Community Knowledge Initiative (CKI), GCCN associate members, are keen to engage NUIG business analytics postgraduate students in the community through service learning so that these students might be of benefit to your organisation and learn more about community within an Irish context.

  • Do you feel that you could benefit from using business analytics skills and would like to explore how business analytics could support your business?
  • Do you have access to data and wonder what new insights you could generate about improving your business operations or identifying new trends or opportunities?
  • Would you like to explore what collaboration opportunities might exist for you and a group of MSc. in Business Analytics students at NUIG (with no costs to you)?
If you answer ‘Yes’ to any of the above questions, please feel free to reach out to Dr. Noel Carroll at to arrange an initial meeting and/or to learn more about the collaboration process.

Love Not Hate
 Endorse the Campaign

During the recent GCCN Plenary meeting held on the 4th of December, a new motion proposed by the Galway Anti Racism Network (GARN) was approved unanimously. GARN proposed that GCCN started to endorse the Love Not Hate Campaign with immediate effect, as there is no hate crime legislation in Ireland.

This is a call for the Irish government to introduce hate crime legislation immediately, to protect people from various minorities in Ireland. We need to send a clear message that racism and hate have no place in our communities and that our society should be inclusive of all.

We must break the silence on hate crime, encourage people to report it, and find effective ways to address all forms of racism and prejudice.

This legislation can help to achieve that. Introducing hate crime legislation would place us among the majority of countries in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the European and common law countries. It would help Ireland meet its European Union and International obligations.

Hate Speech
Public Consultation

As part of reviewing the legislation on hate speech the Department of Justice and Equality is consulting the public and stakeholders about how Ireland’s law in this area can be improved.
This consultation forms part of the review of existing law in this area, the Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act 1989, and aims to ensure that Ireland’s legislation on hate speech is fit for purpose and is effective in meeting the real needs of communities and individuals who experience the impacts of hate speech.

Improvements in our hate-speech legislation are one element in a wider suite of measures across all areas of Government which are designed to address hatred and intolerance, including the development of hate crime legislation. These measures will span across policies, operational areas, law enforcement and educational measures designed to support a safe, fair and inclusive Ireland, where expressions of hatred and prejudice are not tolerated and can be dealt with swiftly and effectively where they occur.

There are three ways to have a say:

  • Take a five-question survey here or at the link below;
  • Make a written submission - Send a written submission to before 13th December 2019. If you are making a written submission it is recommended that you read the consultation document below;
  • Workshops - The Department will also be actively engaging with the NGO community as part of this public consultation.  If you are part of a group that would like to participate in the consultation process please email

An Mheitheal Rothar Wins Social Entrepreneurs Ireland Prize

An Mheitheal Rothar, a social-sustainable enterprise member of GCCN, based at NUI Galway, has won a prize of €5,000 and is now one of just 3 enterprises in Ireland to be awarded this level of support by the Social Enterprise Ireland Academy in 2019.

Paul O’Donnell, An Mheitheal Rothar’s lead coordinator, outlined the reason that they were chosen, “We were truly delighted to have been selected by SEI for this prize which recognises the work that we are doing in our ReCycle Your Cycle initiative. Under this programme, we take bikes that have been sent for scrap from Galway City Council’s waste facility and we train our mechanics to fix them so that we can then sell them from our premises based at NUI Galway. Not only are we reducing waste that would have gone to landfill, but we are also teaching trainee bike mechanic valuable skills whilst providing low-cost, fossil fuel free transport for people in our community”.
