Fly a kite in aid of Jigsaw

This Fathers' Day, everyone is invited to South Park to fly a kite for men and boys' mental health. The idea is to create a powerful visual spectacle of support for the men and boys in our lives. The organisers are aiming to get 300 kites in the sky.

When:  Sunday 16th June, 12noon
Where: South Park - The Swamp, Galway

This event is also a tribute to those who have lost their lives in the River Corrib, one of the reasons why the location is beside the River Corrib at South Park.

The facts are that there is a disproportionate number of men taking their lives each year. One of the reasons for this is isolation (perceived or real one). From a young age, many men are taught not to express emotion. To do so is seen as weak.

Flying a kite on June 16th on 'The Swamp' is a way to acknowledge there is a problem within our society and that many men are finding it difficult to communicate when they are struggling, worried or having a hard time.
This event is hoping to shine more light on men's emotional needs.
Let's open up the conversation and let men and boys know that it's ok to talk openly about how they feel. Because a society that encourages healthy communication is a better society for everyone.

Kites are available to buy at the link below.
All proceeds going to local youth mental health charity Jigsaw.

People are also welcome to bring their own kites on the day or to simply come along and enjoy the spectacle.

Nuns' Island Regeneration

Two-Day Public Consultation Event

NUI Galway is holding a two-day public consultation event to generate ideas for the future of the Nuns’ Island area of the city.  The University, in partnership with Galway City Council, is developing a masterplan to explore the opportunities for this area within Galway city through an appropriate mix of redevelopment and public realm spaces.

When:
  • Friday 21st June, 10am - 3pm
  • Saturday 22nd June, 10am - 3pm
Where:
O’Donoghue Centre, University's South Campus, NUI Galway

The master-plan is being developed by a global team of architecture firm BDP, property advisor Colliers International and engineering business AECOM. The project, which commenced earlier this year, has so far involved engagement with residents, the City Council, the University community, together with a range of local organisations.

Members of the public have the opportunity to view the ideas generated to date and engage in discussion with University representatives and members of the project team, available throughout both Friday and Saturday to discuss or answer any questions.
