A meeting of the GCCN Environment Linkage Group will take place on Monday February 25th at 6pm in the GCCN Office, Westside Resource Centre.

1916 Bursary Fund

Announced by the then Minister for Education and Skills in December 2017, the aim of the 1916 Bursary Fund is to encourage participation and success by students from sections of society that are significantly under-represented in higher education.

 

Despite overwhelming support to allow Buskers in Galway to self-regulate, Busking Bylaws were adopted by Galway City Council in May 2018. Because of a technicality, they have been sent back fro public consultation.

A copy of the proposed Bye-Laws are available for inspection at the offices of the Galway City Council, Customer Services Desk, City Hall, College Road, Galway, between the hours of 9.00 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Thursday 31" January to Friday 1" March, 2019. They are available to download below.
 
Written submissions in relation to the Draft Galway City Council (Street Performance & Busking) Bye-Laws 2019 should be made to the Environment & Climate Change Section, Galway City Council, City Hall, College Road, Galway not later than 4 p.m. on Friday 6" March, 2019 or by visiting https://www.galwaycity.ie/busking

All submissions shall be considered by the Galway City Council prior to making the Bye-Laws.

On World Hearing Day 2019, the World Health Organisation (WHO) will draw attention to the importance of early identification and intervention for hearing loss. Many people live with unidentified hearing loss, often failing to realize that they are missing out on certain sounds and words. Checking one’s hearing would be the first step towards addressing the issue.

On 3 March 2019, the WHO will launch a free app that allows people to check their hearing. The HearWHO app can be used to:

• Raise awareness about the importance of hearing
• Encourage people to check their hearing regularly and practice safe listening
• Allow health workers to check the hearing status of people in their communities

Community Foundation for Ireland

The Community Foundation for Ireland has announced the Older Persons’ Fund. This is a long-term philanthropic fund which promotes the civic engagement of older people, as a means of working towards making a difference in their communities.

The Fund builds on the CFI long-standing engagement and commitment to supporting older people in their communities, having already invested over €1m in this area to date.

In 2019, there are two categories that grants are available for:

• Inclusion of older people in active citizenship roles – Grants of up to €7,500 will be available to organisations working towards inclusion of older people in active citizenship roles
• Supporting older peoples’ voices at local & national level – Grants of up to €7,500 will available to organisations working towards supporting older peoples’ engagement in advocacy. 

 
Workshop on Monday 4 March 2019, 11.00am – 1.00pm in the Harbour Hotel, New Dock Road, 

Led by the Centre for Cross Border Studies the “Bringing the Agreement Home” project offers an accessible review of the 1998 Belfast/Good Friday Agreement and subsequent related agreements, informing and engaging community organisations in Northern Ireland and Ireland on the provisions of the agreements and the institutions and bodies they created through a series of workshops and an “All-Island Conversation”

The Belfast/Good Friday Agreement has become a core issue in the negotiations over the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, with all the main negotiating parties expressing their desire to avoid undermining it as a result of Brexit. This workshop will help to build an understanding of the importance of the agreement.

 

Development Perspectives are currently recruiting for their SDG advocate programme, the SDG Advocate programme offers 26 active citizens an opportunity to represent their community, by becoming one of Ireland’s positive changemakers. The 8month training course will allow the advocates to deepen their understanding of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals, represent the project internationally and lead transformative change in Ireland. We are looking for community activists, change makers and global thinkers to apply for the chance to take part by February 19th. The chosen participants will travel to Vietnam or Tanzania for 2 weeks during summer 2019. The work/study visit affords an invaluable chance to experience first-hand perspectives and challenges that people face in a different global context.

 

This part-time educational programme and life-changing opportunity is one element of a larger project called the #SDGchallenge which was awarded the Dóchas 2017 SDG Champion Award, an award designed to recognise an organisation that has done outstanding work around the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals and was a finalist in the 2018 UN SDG Action Awards, designed to recognise outstanding achievements and innovative efforts to promote action on the Sustainable Development Goals.
