Principal's Message

Welcome to February 2017.
It’s official: the days are getting longer.  By the end of the month, each day will have almost two hours more daylight than at the beginning, Yahoo.
January has been a great month.  We finished our F & P testing (that is testing our students’ reading, both comprehension and fluency) this past month.  While we have some work to do, overall we can confidently say that 82% of our students are reading at grade level.  This is cause for celebration.  January also featured CP READS, a celebration of all things reading at College Park.  We challenged our staff and students to see if we could get 8000 nights of reading in; and we exceeded that goal with 9118 nights of reading.  That means each person at College Park school had to read more than 18 nights in January.  Way to go College Park.
February 10th & 11th will see our basketball teams participating in district play downs, and on February 16th (in the afternoon and evening) our grade 5 & 6 three on three basketball tournament will be held at Jack Kemp School.
If you have a child in grade 4 or 7 you may have received a survey from Alberta Education, called the Accountability Pillars Survey. Feel free to complete this survey as it will provide some data for Alberta Education, however, we are not contracting the use of this data for LPSD as we report to Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Education, and as such the information will not find its way back to us.  We will be using another survey for students and parents this year to ensure we are accessing your voice.
As we enter the second half of our school year, we will be gearing up to prepare our grade 9’s for their transition to LCHS and the world of high school.  This process will begin in February with Mr. McLennan and Mrs. Rideout-Brace visiting each class to discuss the High School environment, terminology, graduation requirements, etc. and answer any questions the students may have.
I invite you to take some time this month and ask your son or daughter about their learning at College Park School.  As always if you have feedback or questions, feel free to contact someone at the school or attend an SCC meeting (the next one is February 8th at 7:00 in the staff room).
Have a great second half of the 2016-2017 school year.

K. David McLennan, Principal

3 on 3 Basketball
3 on 3 basketball is open to all boys and girls in grades 5 and 6.  It is a fantastic introduction to the sport.  While practices focus on skill development and fun, players get a chance to play in interschool league games.  This year we have 36 students divided into 3 teams.  The highlight so far has been the Lakeland College Rustlers and LCHS Barons minicamp held the first week of January.  It was great for our players new to the sport to learn from high level athletes.  Best of luck on the rest of the season!

Grade 6 Safety Patrol

Even on indoor recess days when the windchill factor is far below -25, our safety patrollers have been outside keeping the crosswalk safe.  We must thank the grade 6 safety patrollers for their dedication to duty and the responsibility and leadership shown.  This year's team includes:  Kamryn, Briza, Nora, Caleb, Kate, Luke, Declan, Sarah, Brianna, Jayva, Nevin, Payton, Makenzie, Hannah, Kira, Bronwyn, Courtlyn, Adam, Abey, Erin, and Kailyn.  THANK YOU TEAM!
Mr. Collin Walker, Teacher Supervisor

Grade 1 and 2 Field Trip

Grade 1 and 2 students will be skating at Bud Miller Park on Friday, February 17, from 1:00 - 2:30 pm.  Dress warm!

Cross Country Ski Club

Ski season kicked off with dryland training sessions on January 16 and 18. Practices are held Monday and Wednesday after school from 3:15 - 4:30 with about 20 students in attendance each day. The students will be learning the classic techniques which include Diagonal Stride, Double Poling, Kick Double Poling as well as how to ski downhill with cross country skis.  We are hoping to have ski tracks created around the school yard and through the neighborhood, as well as some ski playground obstacles, providing we get enough snow.
We are fortunate to have sets of skis, boots and poles at College Park School for the students to borrow during lessons.
On Wednesday, March 1st the LPSD Elementary Athletics Council will host a cross-country ski race again this year at the Lloydminster Golf and Country Club.  The LPSD Loppet is a unique opportunity for the students to compete against other LPSD elementary schools on a 1 km scenic loop. Registration forms will be provided to interested students at the beginning of February.
Note: Students do not need to be part of the Cross Country Ski club to partake in the Loppet.
Please contact Mrs. Merryweather if you have any questions about the ski club or events.

FROM THE BAND ROOM

January has been a month of new beginnings and new experiences for Cobras Band students!

Our Grade 7 students traveled to Edmonton on January 20th to learn about music in different ways. In the morning we went to the Winspear to watch the ESO rehearse for the evening's concert "Hollywood Goes to Space".  Many of the students had never seen the orchestra before and so it was a great experience for them!  In the afternoon we traveled to McEwan University where the students participated in a band rehearsal under the baton of Ms. Dianne Persson, and in instrument sectionals led by McEwan University students.  A great day for our grade 7's!

We have also started running some small ensembles for the students which they are really enjoying.  Students are playing in our brass ensemble, grade 6 French Horn Club, saxophone ensemble, clarinet ensemble, and percussion ensemble.  More students are welcome to join if they would like!

Our Jazz Band travels to Edmonton On February 8-9 to take in the Jazzworks Workshops.
