Mannkal's e-Focus                         April 2017

Dear <<First Name>>

Mannkal has been extraordinarily busy interviewing and selecting the next group of university students to tackle the big economic questions.

We are pleased to announce our selection for two of the biggest conferences in the liberty movement – the Friedman Conference (28th – 30th April), held at UTS in Sydney, and the Mont Pelerin Society Annual Regional Conference in Seoul. Nineteen students will be sponsored to attend the Friedman Conference and seven students for the MPS Regional Conference in May. All students are of the highest calibre, and they have all attended a number of workshops at our Subiaco office, where the topics have ranged from Brexit to the gold standard.
It is a pleasure seeing how interested these budding Mannkal scholars are in classical liberal ideas and they are sure to meet some of the greatest proponents of a free society at each conference. In Sydney, they will hear from prominent voices such as Nick Gillespie, Head Editor of Reason Magazine, Prof. Mike Munger of Duke University in the US, and Australia’s own Cory Bernardi. Across the Pacific, our MPS scholars will mix with some of the best and brightest minds to discuss the future of freedom across the globe. In addition, those students will make a trip to the DMZ to see with their own eyes what lengths tyrannical governments will go to to.

The stark contrast between 'good' and 'bad' countries could not be more clear today with recent developments in Syria, North Korea and Turkey. Too many countries that were once on the right path are now taking a swift turn towards authoritarianism. Ron touched on this exact topic in his latest Mannerisms, which features an alternate Welcome to Country and details the why we need to protect the values that differentiate good countries from the bad.

Yours in liberty,

Paul McCarthy

Mannkal offers international scholarships to Western Australian students. These unique scholarships grant interested young adults a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to intern at an international think tank.

To apply please email the following documents to Kate Wagstaff at
  • Resume/Curriculum Vitae (up to two pages) including photograph (within CV)
  • Statement of Academic Record (an unofficial transcript is sufficient)
  • Cover Letter (1 page) detailing why you are the best candidate for this scholarship, and what you hope to gain
  • Please write on only one of the opportunities on offer. Applicants who progress through to the interview stage of the selection process will be considered for all scholarship opportunities.
Applications are now open for 2017 End of Year Internships.

Our multi-step application process involves getting to know you through research reports, events, interviews and workshops. The process can take several months, beginning with your application - so the sooner you apply the better!

Each year, mid-year internship applications close in February, and places are determined around April/May. End of year internship applications close in August, and places are finalised in October/November.

Students who are not successful in receiving a scholarship in one intake will still be eligible for the next intake. The longer we have to get to know you, the better we are able to potentially match you with a suitable host think-tank.

Now is the time to apply, whether you're in first or last year at University.
