Mannkal's e-Focus                         March 2017

Dear <<First Name>>

We proudly welcome home our 2016 scholars from their internships around the world! The feedback from each host leaves us in no doubt that our internship opportunities bring out the best within our students. Our 2016 scholars will remain part of Mannkal's Young Leader Program through Alumni workshops and networking opportunities. Congratulations to Amy Thomasson, who interned at the New Zealand Initiative and was offered a graduate job there, and Foluso Tade, who interned at the FNF Foundation in Berlin and is now starting a career in Germany!

We were delighted to have a special visit from Larry Reed, President of the Foundation for Economic Education, for our 20th Anniversary Scholars and Friends Evening. Larry shared examples of 'real heroes' from his latest book Real Heroes: Inspiring Trues Stories of Courage, Character and Conviction. Event photos can be found here.

We kept Larry busy with workshops and a private lunch with Western Australian university leaders. We are very grateful Larry came all the way from Atlanta, Georgia to spend a few days with Mannkal.

This week, cartoonist Bill Leak's death saddened us all. Bill was a champion of free speech and a influential advocate to its cause. Bill was an ambassador of liberty and he will be greatly missed.

Finally, this month's editions of Ron’s Mannerisms recounts a cyber attack on the Mannwest website earlier this month. Paul’s Perspective has two parts: the first calls out activist faculty members at UWA who shamed first-year students during O-Week for their "male privilege" and the second offers some reasons why "renewable" energy is not fit for purpose. "The science is settled" but South Australia's Premier doesn't want to hear it!

Yours in liberty,

Paul McCarthy
Bill Leak RIP with Honour!

Just as Bill Leak becomes the hero of free-speech for Australians he tragically leaves us.

Mannkal offers international scholarships to Western Australian students. These unique scholarships grant interested young adults a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to intern at an international think tank.

To apply please email the following documents to Kate Wagstaff at
  • Resume/Curriculum Vitae (up to two pages) including photograph (within CV)
  • Statement of Academic Record (an unofficial transcript is sufficient)
  • Cover Letter (1 page) detailing why you are the best candidate for this scholarship, and what you hope to gain
  • Please write on only one of the opportunities on offer. Applicants who progress through to the interview stage of the selection process will be considered for all scholarship opportunities.
Applications are now open for 2017 End of Year Internships.

Our multi-step application process involves getting to know you through research reports, events, interviews and workshops. The process can take several months, beginning with your application - so the sooner you apply the better!

Each year, mid-year internship applications close in February, and places are determined around April/May. End of year internship applications close in August, and places are finalised in October/November.

Students who are not successful in receiving a scholarship in one intake will still be eligible for the next intake. The longer we have to get to know you, the better we are able to potentially match you with a suitable host think-tank.

Now is the time to apply, whether you're in first or last year at University.
