Governor Cooper Celebrates at RMM

Rocky Mount Mills had a great time hosting Governor Roy Cooper and the North Carolina Craft Brewers Guild Friday, March 24, 2017, on campus as he proclaimed April to be NC Beer Month. Governor Cooper signed a State Proclamation Friday as he sat, signed and sipped on a beer brewed with watermelon from Tarboro Brewing Company.

The Governor toured the Mills campus including: the Brewery Incubators, the Main Mill, Nash Community College’s 360 Brewing Classroom, Ramblers Rocky Mount Bottle Shop and was able to visit with friends and supporters in the Beer Garden.

Welcome home Governor Cooper and cheers to the month of April!

I’m sure most everyone is familiar with the fact that dogs and cats can get internal parasites as well as fleas and ticks.  However, it may be good to know about some common ones to better prevent them.

We commonly see roundworms and hookworms in younger puppies and kittens.  These worms can be passed through the placenta or the milk.  Therefore, puppies and kittens can literally be born with worms.  They can also be obtained through ingestion of larva from the soil which is usually passed through feces.  They are unique in that they can live in the lungs for part of their lifespan and can be vomited or coughed up.  The adults live in the small intestines.  These worms can cause pneumonia, vomiting, diarrhea, weight-loss, and anemia.  They are considered zoonotic, meaning that people can be infected.  Hookworms can penetrate the skin, which is why kids shouldn’t play in uncovered sandboxes which are exposed to possibly infected animals and their stinky worm poop.  And make sure you wash your hands to avoid ingestion of the larva.  The good news, these worms are usually easy to treat.  There are multiple preventatives that help prevent against them, in addition to heartworms.  Some of which may even prevent against fleas too.

Thanks for reading and have a great week.
