RMHC Love Notes              December 2017

Wildcats for Kids

The Macro Practice and Theory class in the Kansas State University Social Work Program adopted the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Kansas for a semester-long project, which featured a Cats for Kids Tailgate Fundraiser at the KSU homecoming game on October 21. More than $1,500 was raised at the event, which included a silent auction. The icing on the cake - they filled our freezer with leftover smoked turkey sausage and hamburger patties.  We thank these students from the bottom of our hearts for developing what hopefully will be a long-term partnership between the KSU Social Work Program and our organization.  Some of the students are pictured here with RMHC Board President-elect Jennifer Dieker and Board member Dr. Robert Sidlinger (both far right), who attended the tailgate fundraiser.
Congratulations to the students from Osage City Middle School for winning the 2016-2017 school year Pop Tabs Contest! They were awarded a trophy and check for $2,000 provided through grant funding from the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. These students collected and donated a whopping 157 pounds of pop tabs, which were recycled to raise funds to support family stays.

Holiday Fill the Pantry Drive

Cumulus - Topeka, KSNT and the Seabrook Apple Market held a Fill the Pantry Drive for Topeka's Ronald McDonald House, which culminated with an in-store promotion and grocery delivery on Saturday, December 2.  Generous shoppers donated multiple van loads of food items, including more than 50 pounds of meat; milk, bread, butter and eggs; household and nonperishable food items; grocery gift cards and books of first class postage stamps. What a wonderful holiday blessing for our House and all the families we serve!
Members of our Board of Directors accepted a $6,941.29 donation from the Great Plains Balloon Club on December 19, which represents the 2017 Huff 'n Puff balloon rally proceeds. This is an increase over last year's amount and we greatly appreciate our long-standing partnership with the club and its amazing members!  Their support is invaluable to the Ronald McDonald House and all families we serve.
With just eight sleeping rooms at the Ronald McDonald House, staff get the chance to interact daily with and provide face-to-face support for our families. The littlest truly find their way into our hearts. We are thankful for the opportunity to help keep families close to their hospitalized children!

2017 Cookie Walk & Holiday Bake Sale

We raised more than $4,100 at our December 8 Cookie Walk & Holiday Bake Sale, breaking all previous sales records! We received amazing support from home and professional bakers, who donated a huge amount of baked goods, which was matched by a greatly increased number of shoppers this year. Please mark your calendar for next year's event,
which will be held on Friday, December 7, 2018.
We received a most generous donation from Indian Hills Church thanks to this little guy, William Glenn, and his family. William picked Topeka's Ronald McDonald House to receive a donation of $6,382.65 from the church based on his family's experience at a different House during his two hospitalizations. We are so thankful for William and everyone at Indian Hills Church, and are especially happy he's healthy and doing great!

At the RMHC leadership holiday gathering Board President Mary McBride presented a beautiful framed Ronald McDonald House print, which was created by Topeka West High School's Jobs for American Graduates Program, to Vic Walther in appreciation for his years of service on the Board.  While he is stepping away from Board service, Vic will continue as Chair of our 2018 Charity Golf Classic Planning Committee and plans to stay involved in our other events. We certainly appreciate everything Vic does to support our House and our families!
We are very blessed to receive a $5,000 donation from the National Information Consortium this holiday season. Staff from the Kansas Information Consortium (KIC) were named "Team of the Year" for their charitable efforts and awarded $5,000 to pass off to a charity of their choice. They picked Topeka's Ronald McDonald House! Our friends at KIC participate regularly in our Meal Makers Program and are dedicated volunteers.
