Message from DG Jason Long

District 14-M Lions,

As the Holiday Season is upon us, I ask the Lions of District 14-M to keep our members and their families who are ill in their thoughts and prayers. I also ask you to remember those who are in need during this time. Take advantage of the additional opportunities to get your clubs involved in helping those in need during this time of year. Consider volunteering to participate in the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign or Toys for Tots for example. These are worthy service projects that provide an opportunity for clubs to serve those in need as well as gain some visibility in your communities. I am very proud of how many of our clubs have been finding new ways to serve their communities and raise funds during the pandemic. I encourage all clubs to “think outside the box” and try something new to serve your community or raise funds for your club. These new activities can also provide exposure to people who have never interacted with a Lions Club before and are unaware of all of the things that we do.

I would like to remind you that time is running out to take advantage of the $35 initiation fee waiver for all new members. This program ends at midnight December 31, 2020. Please take advantage of this program in your recruiting efforts. I want to thank everyone who attended the Cabinet Meeting on November 22.  Attendance was sparse, but I understand the concerns that many members have attending in person meetings during the pandemic. With that in mind, I have cancelled the Cabin Fever Party that was scheduled for January 23, 2021. Cabinet Meeting #3 will remain as previously scheduled in February. Please check my updated visitation schedule in this newsletter. We also have some clubs in District 14-M that have not paid International, State, or District dues. Please keep in mind that the deadline for paying International dues is December 31, 2020. Clubs that have not paid International dues by that date will be placed on status quo subject to financial suspension on January 1, 2021.

Lastly, it is with great regret that I must announce the resignation of 2nd Vice District Governor Bernie Fox due to health reasons. I want to thank Bernie for her service and wish her well in her future endeavors as a Lion. I also would ask all of the Lions of District 14-M to keep Lion Bernie in your thoughts and prayers for healing and good health. We are now in need of a 2nd VDG for District 14-M. The qualifications to fill this position are included in this newsletter. If you qualify and are interested, please contact me, District GLT Coordinator PCC Dan Swincinski, or Chairman of the Nominating Committee PDG Ed Gursky. Keep in mind that anyone filling this position will be expected to the seek the office of 1st Vice District Governor at the District Convention this Spring and continue on to run for District Governor.

Yours in Service,
DG Jason Long

Message from 1st VDG Karl Jackson

My partner Annette and I would like to say Happy Thanksgiving, and we hope and pray that it was enjoyable by all.  Also, I would like to say it was nice seeing our senior most First Lady of District 14-M, Mrs. Olive Higinbotham.  I would like to thank all of our presidents, Zone chairs, and Region Chairs for their hard work keeping the clubs functioning during this difficult time in our life.  I pray that we can keep the light of lionism shinning bright in our communities.  Stay safe and always do your best.

November Club Reports

Berlin Lions Club-This month, the Berlin Lions Club recognized the Outstanding Citizens from the Berlin Community.  This was the 38th year for the recognition and this year it went to Mr. John F. Long.  John lived and worked in the community all his life.  Professionally, he was a master carpenter; remolding and building homes in the county. In addition to his professional career, he was a volunteer fireman for over 60 years, on the Berlin Borough council for 28 years (16 as president) and supported several builders associations.  For years he has been a volunteer worker for the Operation Christmas Child.

Our fall fund raising raffle activity concluded on 24 Nov, with the winning ticket holder awarded $500 and the club netted over $1900.  Proceeds will be used to purchase AED units for local churches, schools, and business organizations.  On 16 Nov. we sponsored the Red Cross blood drive activity at the Berlin Veterans Home.  Community members contributed 31 units of much need blood.  Our annual Holiday party with Meyersdale and Salisbury Lions Clubs has been cancelled this year because of the COVID19 pandemic.  Our meeting is Thursday 7 January where we will honor the outstanding male students for the fall 2020 semester.

We are participating in the Koeze nut fundraiser.  Two club members attended the cabinet meeting on November 22.  Our club worked in conjunction with the Fayette County Blind Association and Speedway Convenience store and held an eye screening in which 45% of the persons screened were identified with potential eye problems and were given referrals.  We are collecting boxes for soldiers which will be sent to active soldiers from Pennsylvania.  The club assisted two local families with Thanksgiving dinners.
