Our final magazine of the year is heading to your letterbox now.  Here is a link to the electronic copy too.  Again, a big thank you to Sarah McConnell for volunteering many hours to the design and layout of this magazine – AND to the amazing people at BlueStar who print it free of charge.  These are 2 factors that mean we can continue publishing the magazine for you!

We would like to have contributions from a wider range of people in 2023.  Please keep this in mind.  It’s important for our community to know more about each other – and the magazine is a great way to reach everyone.  If you have story, achievement, challenge, information to share – please contact Paula via email (clo@adsa.org.nz).

REGISTER NOW for 2023

We look forward to many members returning to the ADSA Social Clubs for 2023 – and we also would love some NEW MEMBERS in the 11-17 and 18+ age groups.

Existing Members: please email Annabelle (annabelle@recreate.org.nz) and Xuan (adminsupport@adsa.org.nz) and let us know if you are returning,.

New members - please complete the registration form at this link (Social Club Registrations)

The 2023 calendars will be updated to our website as soon as possible.  The first date for 2023 is 11th February.  Activities will be similar to 2022 - perhaps with a few favourites appearing twice!  And a gentle reminder that queries and feedback should be provided directly to Recreate in the first instance.

JUNIORS CAMP

Members of the Junior social club are being offered the chance to go on a 2-night camp 24-26 February 2023.  Details are available from Recreate (Annabelle).  There is space for 10 members to attend, and possibly some people to come for a day if preferred.

CHANGE OF FACILITATOR

During February and March, a new facilitator will take over from Annabelle – as she moves to a different role within Recreate.  This will be carefully managed by Recreate to ensure a smooth transition by April.
Our list of regular volunteers to help with events and projects is very short.  We would like to build this up for 2023.  Please email Xuan (adminsupport@adsa.org.nz) or complete the website link if you are available to help us.

Manukau Steamers – Waitangi Day 2023

Save the date 6th February for a free fun day out at the Manukau Steamers. This is a great day out! Click here for details.

You can register any time until end February!  All the details including our flyer are here.  March 2023 Registrations

Save the Date – 19 March

Please put a place holder in your brand-new diaries for 19 March 2023.  We will hold a community event to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day.  This won’t a Buddy Walk extravaganza.  The priority will be something relaxed, with a little entertainment, a little food, and a BIG OPPORTUNITY to meet as a community for the first time since 2019.  We need PLENTY of volunteers to help on 19 March AND to be involved in organising the event.  Please reach out to Xuan if you would like to be part of making it happen!  adminsupport@adsa.org.nz  This event will be in a South Auckland location.

The “Get Down and Dance” celebration of diversity will also be held at Orewa beach front (as per 2021).  This is run separately by a group of parents in that area.  More details will follow closer to the time.
Coffee groups and Primary school play dates will be scheduled via Facebook in Term 1.
It is a bittersweet farewell this month to "Sarah from UpsideDowns"! She has really become part of the ADSA community since 2016 when she joined UpsideDowns. Now, six years later, our favourite "CEO and Dishwasher" is leaving for different (Red) pastures as an elected member of her local board (Whau). We wish Sarah well in her new endeavours and thank her for the incredible role she has played in raising awareness of the communication needs of people with Down syndrome. Her relentless thirst for knowledge, passion to improve, to inform and reach more people, has been inspirational and far reaching.  (NB: Sarah will still be editor of the NZDSA Chat 21 magazine – so save some stories for her, after you have sent us your ADSA stories!)
We take this chance to wish all our ADSA whanau a very happy and safe Christmas and holiday period. Our office will be closed from 19th December and reopen Monday 16th January.  Our summer hours are flexible due to both staff also having children at home in the school holiday period.  For urgent queries during the closure period, you may contact Maia (chairperson@adsa.org.nz) or phone 021 069 3895.
Please email Xuan on adminsupport@adsa.org.nz or Paula on clo@adsa.org.nz if you have any questions regarding the events and news highlighted in this update.
