I’ve spent a lot of time driving back and forth to Northern Virginia in the last few weeks. Some trips were joyous, some solemn. Our youngest grandson graduated from high school this year, and we enjoyed celebrating his accomplishment. The solemn trips resulted from the deaths of two old and dear friends from our Alexandria church. That’s one of the things that go along with living many years—we tend to lose old friends along the way. Hot summer days (the Williamsburg heat index has been in the 110° F range all the last week) do encourage one to stay indoors with air conditioning and work on my writing.

Writing Update

My writing on Endure the Cruel Sun (ETCS) has reached the final day of the Battle of the Coral Sea. My U.S. Navy dive-bomber pilot, LTJG Hal Wright, has just found the Japanese 5th Carrier Division while flying his search pattern. After radioing back a sighting report and sending his wingman to confirm it, Hal is dodging in and out of clouds to continue tracking the enemy carriers. As he watches, a powerful strike group takes off from the Japanese flattops and heads toward the American fleet. Will American planes soon arrive to attack the Japanese force? And will there be a flight deck upon which to land when Hal returns to the U.S. task force?

Looking Forward

I’m looking forward to a week at North Carolina’s Outer Banks with my daughter and her family in a few days. Kicking back and enjoying the beach is always a great way to recharge the batteries. Lying in a hammock with cool sea breezes rocking one to sleep is a pleasure hard to beat. A little later, I’ll be preparing to speak and participate in another Seabee battalion reunion in September. It’s always invigorating to talk to other old Seabees and share our “sea stories,” like those in my novel Asphalt and Blood.
