A40 London Road Corridor Improvements Project

Bulletin #015 - 03/07/20
A40 London Road Corridor Improvements Project
National Productivity Investment Fund

The project seeks to improve journey time reliability and ease congestion on the A40 London Road through the delivery of a range of improvements including junction changes, introduction of new traffic management technology, bus stop improvements and the optimisation of bus lane locations.
This phase of works is focusing on junction construction and builds on the work already completed to date including  improvements already made including new CCTV, refurbishment of all signalised pedestrian crossings, variable message signs and queue detection sensors. The stretch from Easton Street to Loudwater includes junction improvements at the Gordon Road, Hatters Lane, Micklefield Road with Ryemead Way and Gomm Road junctions.  When all works are fully completed, it will mean better and more reliable journeys for all who use this key route in and out of the town centre.
Recent Works
Hatter's Lane
Work to widen London Road near Hatters Lane roundabout have now been completed with the following improvements being delivered:
  • Carriageway widening which will provide a bus lane across the roundabout, extending to the existing westbound bus lane.
  • Relocation of the westbound bus stop away from the roundabout exit. This will ensure buses do not block existing westbound traffic, improving junction safety and capacity.
  • Relocation and upgrade of uncontrolled crossing to line up with the new bus stop location.
Upcoming Works and Traffic Management
Micklefield Road/ Ryemead Way/ Cock Lane/ London Road junction
Prior to main construction resuming at this junction on 20th July, advance utility diversion works are planned for week commencing 6th July. This involves installing new ducting in the southern footway, to the west of the junction, to allow for the upcoming widening of London Road. Work will be within the footway, but at times it will be necessary for the carriageway to be narrowed to provide pedestrian access and a safe working zone for the workforce.
Wye Estate/ London Road junction
Work will begin on 13th July at the Wye Estate junction with London Road (between Hatter's Lane roundabout and the Ryemead Way/ Micklefield Road junction). The upcoming work will involve minor kerb realignment and the installation of tactile paving. This will be followed by line marking changes which will be carried out at a later date, and in combination with other lining works on the London Road. The changes being made in this area are to create a right turn lane into Wye Estate to allow right turning vehicles to wait safely without blocking outbound traffic. Work will be within the footway, but carriageway narrowing will be necessary to provide a safe working zone for the workforce.
