We decided to devote this  newsletter to a simple conversation about difference and indifference.  The beauty of what each human or group is in variance to others.  The beauty of our best as humans when we actively appreciate the value of someone else.  There will always be voices of charlatans masquerading as leaders in the face of so much work yet left to do.  But among us we will always have the sheltering voices of proven friends.  And we thought we’d let some of those friends do the talking now:
“Love cannot endure indifference. It needs to be wanted.
Like a lamp, it needs to be fed out of the oil of another's heart,
or its flame burns low.”    Henry Ward Beecher

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
Martin Luther King Jr.
What I know most is that the difference between us is what makes us interesting
and attractive and problematic and exciting and vital to each other.
Give me difference over indifference any day.”
Ali Smith

“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries.
                    Without them humanity cannot survive.”
                                              Dalai Lama

“Our task must be to free ourselves by widening
our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures
and the whole of nature and its beauty.” Albert Einstein
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”  Nelson Mandela

“Prejudice is sinful. All blood flows red.” Jewell Parker Rhodes
“As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples,
if you love one another.”  Jesus the Christ
“If we love our country, we should also love our countrymen.” Ronald Reagan
“The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.”
Ellie Wiese
“America will never be destroyed from the outside.
If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”
Abraham Lincoln
“Geography has made us neighbors. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners, and necessity has made us allies. Those whom God has so joined together, let no man put asunder.”
John F. Kennedy
“Woe to those who make unjust laws and who issue oppressive decrees
that deprive the poor and withhold justice from the oppressed,
making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless…”
Isaiah the Prophet

“Prejudice is sinful. All blood flows red.” Jewell Parker Rhodes
“Love is the only force that can erase differences between people.”
Gordon B. Hinckley
“God's dream is that you and I and all of us will realize that we are family, that we are made for togetherness, for goodness, and for compassion.”  Desmond Tutu

I Used to Be Different. Now I’m the Same

October 24, 2012 is when everything changed. That was the day my son went to prison. As one of the new friends I made in line waiting to visit him later told me: “Honey, that’s the day you became .....”  Read more...
NIA on the Move

Georgia Department of Corrections Family Day
 August 11th in  Valdosta

Team NIA gathered in record numbers wearing a badge that stated "Working together works when Families can measure success."  We are determined to help  identify the growing numbers of families and advocates that are willing to step outside of the norm and demonstrate cohesion with common purpose.

Each of the NIA representatives were engaged in conversations with wardens, regional wardens and commissioners to voice concerns, ask difficult and somewhat uncomfortable questions and gather the information necessary to encourage positive results for all.

The final meeting of the day had NIA leaders, Monkah Kelly, Karen James, Vincia Blaise, Dedra Lee and CEO Kate Boccia sitting in a private meeting with Commissioner Dozier, Chief of Staff Timothy Ward, Assistant Commissioner of Facilities Ricky Myrick and Director of Offender Administration Kenneth Mantle, to discuss issues around safety, contraband and other very important topics.

Commissioner Dozier expressed his desire to continue working together with open communications between families and the Georgia Department of Corrections.

NIA Pushing Results
Meet Mazzettie

The families that come to the NIA for help end up becoming leaders. Below is an email and video we recently received from Mazzettie through the JPay system with Georgia Department of Corrections.  We continue to encourage all families to only engage in modes of communication that are both legal and in accordance  with facility regulations.

"I am here at Walker State Prison. Thank you for all that you do. I'm still with you in this journey. Everyday I'll make it my business to create a positive impact on everyone I come into contact with and to prove to this system that they have some real good men locked up who deserves a chance before they're grandads. Anyhow, I hope all is well with you and your family. Is there anything you need me to do? God bless. Mazzetti"
