Just as the clocks turn back, we’re collaborating with Safer Roads Ottawa (SRO) on this safety blitz: we’ll be handing out FREE bike lights to those who are poorly equipped. 2017 Annual Report on Cycling: Call for contributors
Every year, we put together our Annual Report on Cycling. We cover what happened last year, what's coming up, some data on cycling, and any other interesting features on cycling in Ottawa. This helps us get our message out to key politicians and staff, and to the broader Ottawa cycling community.
But this is a big effort, and we need your help. We're looking for your ideas, your stories, your photographs, your skills in mapping, graphic design, layout, copy-editing, or whatever you think would make this report a success. If you have something to contribute, we want you to get involved. Drop a line to editor@bikeottawa.ca and we'll include you on our mailing list for this year’s annual report working group.
Although attending meetings is not a requirement for this volunteer opportunity (you could take on a role that you can accomplish entirely from the comfort of your own home!), we plan to have our first brainstorming session in late November and would be glad to meet you there if you’re interested.
Advocacy and Infrastructure Updates

Traffic calming measures: How do they affect cycling on our roads?
CfSC members have recently attended City consultation meetings on traffic management for neighbourhoods across Ottawa, from Grey Nuns to Byron to Centrepointe and more. Traffic calming measures such as bulb outs, raised intersections, speed bumps and many others that are being
considered and/or implemented in neighbourhoods across the city affect cyclists by changing the topography of the road as well as behaviours of road users. To inform our advocacy efforts, CfSC is currently researching how our members feel different traffic calming measures affect their safety when cycling. We’ll be surveying our members shortly and look forward to sharing the results of our research. Stay tuned!

Federal government launches task force on cycling safety
In September, federal Minister of Transportation Marc Garneau announced the creation of a task force on cyclist and pedestrian safety. Working with the provinces and territories, and with research support from Transport Canada, the task force is expected to look at measures such as cameras, side guards on heavy trucks, and awareness programs to reduce the risk of collisions, injuries and deaths on our roads. We were especially glad to hear this given that, following a meeting with CfSC representatives in September, Mayor Jim Watson had written a letter to Garneau urging him to consider such safety measures. Separated bike lanes and protected intersections coming to Baseline Drive?
An open house on the Baseline Road Bus Rapid Transit Corridor in October shared recommended plans for the corridor between Bayshore and Billings Bridge. The recommended plans currently include 22.1 kilometres of separated cycle tracks as well as protected intersections. CfSC was represented at the open house; feedback is currently being reviewed to refine the recommended plans before they are 
presented to Transportation Committee and Council in early 2017. Learn more about the project on the City’s website (PDF).

Ottawa’s first bi-directional separated bike lanes open as part of O’Connor bikeway
Ottawa’s first bi-directional segregated bike lanes opened earlier this month, part of the north-south O’Connor bikeway. Recognizing that new infrastructure requires education for both drivers and cyclists, CfSC is supporting EnviroCentre with volunteers out informing users about how to use these new facilities safely. As with all new bike infrastructure, we look forward to reviewing this facility and how it could be improved further. Email us your suggestions at info@bikeottawa.ca; we will consider them in our own advocacy and pass them on to the City.

Bike lanes and advisory bike lanes on Somerset Street East
A mix of bike lanes and advisory bike lanes have been added on Somerset Street East between the University of Ottawa and the Adawe Bridge, providing a welcome east-west connection. Advisory bicycle lanes are a new type of cycling facility that the City is piloting. They consist of painted lanes with dashed (instead of solid) lines: These
markings give cyclists riding space, but in the absence of cyclists also make the lane available to motorists if needed to pass oncoming traffic.

Highlights from recent activities

Recap: AGM 2016, on the theme of data
We had a fantastic turnout at our 2016 AGM! On September 26, not only did we have the largest ever number of members and guests in attendance (nearly 150), but we also had more members of city council join us than ever before, along with Mayor Jim Watson.
This record attendance mirrors what we've been seeing in our membership, which has also reached record numbers. But it's not just us: we've seen another substantial increase in the counts on Ottawa's bike counters. This is all indicative of the great momentum we're seeing to improve safe cycling in Ottawa. Good data from numbers like these is also key to designing for the future, and for measuring what has already been accomplished. Therefore, "data" was a fitting theme for this year's AGM, with a great presentation by keynote speaker Fraser McLaughlin of EcoCounter. For details, read the full recap on our website.
