Fremantle Society Defamed by Peter Newman
Last week in the Sunday Times, five (5) pages were devoted to the issue of a new skate park for Cottesloe.
The first four pages read like an advertorial written by the well organised and lucrative skate board industry, using trigger word such as "haters" to describe opponents to skate parks.
In the article, Peter Newman is quoted stating that the Fremantle Society led the campaign against the skatepark and that it was "Very elitist, very much about them".
Firstly, the strongly supported campaign in Fremantle was not against another skate park, but the location of it on the green grass of the Esplanade Park instead of 50 metres away in the car park as the $60,000 Masterplan recommended.
Secondly, the campaign was run by FICRA (Fremantle Inner City Residents' Association), not the Fremantle Society, who at the time were busy under President Roel Loopers focussed on QR codes and sending dirty socks to one of their members Premier Colin Barnett about the Warders Cottages (the Premier's office received one pair of socks and didn't respond, but did respond to the report presented by FICRA on the significance of the cottages, by visiting the Warders Cottages and allocating millions of dollars to have them fixed up).
The Sunday Times have indicated they will publish a correction and apology.
Meanwhile in Fremantle, the $60,000 Masterplan for the Esplanade Park lies forgotten, with the $4.5 million recommended for the park, nowhere to be seen.
