direct from our farmers this week:
saffron, rhubarb, chilli ginger

Spicy sauces:  The hot chilli, garlic and ginger sauce from Murray and Love Gourmet is one of the original sauces Geoff started the business with, and it’s still a bestseller – pick up a jar at Boroondara.  With a heat rating of 7/10, one recommendation is to mix it into scrambled eggs for a winter breakfast boost.

Gold infusions: A few threads of saffron add a sweet and musky aroma and flavour to simple dishes like mashed potatoes, poached pears or rice pudding.  Tolmie Gold Saffron will have their A grade high country-grown saffron at Gasworks on Saturday.

Tangy shoots: Bridge Farm Organics started their rhubarb crop with six plants; these days they’re up to 2 acres in Gippsland.  With harvests expected to continue to December, it’s a good time to ask for their rhubarb and coconut cake recipe at Boroondara.

Make the trip to the Macedon Ranges this weekend and visit the thriving, well-stocked Riddells Creek Farmers’ Market, only 45 minutes by train or car from Melbourne.  Offering over 30 stalls, this market is a favourite with local shoppers and producers, making it the place to buy top quality lamb from Fellcroft Farm, high-quality beef from Warialda, or bales of mulching hay from WR Dridan.  Stock up with Geordie from Mt Prospect Farm for the freshest seasonal vegetables.  There’s ample parking, or take the short walk from the train station.
