Direct from the farmers

Wheat, tomatoes and eggs

Local wheat: Burrum Biodynamics have started bringing their 2019 wheat crop to markets.  Farmer Tania Walters says their Scout wheat is about 12% protein, which is great for bread, fresh pasta or biscuits. Buy the whole grains or ask for freshly-ground flour!  Find them at Castlemaine.

Heirloom tomatoes: Market gardeners Somerset Heritage Produce are now harvesting heirloom tomatoes.  Look for black, yellow, peachy orange and stripy green tomatoes – they all have different acidity and sweetness - on their stall at Boroondara (Hawthorn) and Tallarook.

Delightful eggs: Make the trip to Castlemaine market this Sunday and pick some premium paddock-reared eggs from family farmers The Good Life Farm Co.  These eggs are fresh and full of flavour – try them simply fried to taste the difference careful farming makes.

Ivy and Adrian from The Good Seed Kefir

Episode 2: Rose Street Pantry - the TVseries
At 2pm this Sunday, March 1st, the second episode of Rose Street Pantry the TV series will go to air on Channel 31.

Episode 2 will feature Ivy and Adrian from The Good Seed Kefir.  Their business was born out of necessity.  Battling their own health issues they both turned to kefir – a probiotic rich fermented beverage.  Thrilled with the results they started brewing their own, initially sharing it with family and friends.  Before long they were selling their home brew at farmers markets across Melbourne, later relocating to the Mornington Peninsula as their business began to grow.  Today they operate from a factory in Carrum Downs where they produce various flavoured kefir, vegan kimchi and kefir ice pops. You will also see them at a number of accredited Victorian farmers' markets.

Did you know the Tallarook Farmers Market is the only Accredited market in the Mitchell Shire? The market boasts a variety of authentic locally grown produce from real farmers living in the Goulburn Valley. Pick up summer produce like tomatoes and tomatilloes from Somerset Heritage Produce.  Stock up on beef sausages from Chantlan Livestock and Produce.  Try some Heathcote-grown wine by Peregrine Ridge.  The town of Tallarook is nestled at the foothills of the Tallarook ranges and is less than an hour from Melbourne.
