Direct from the farmers

Cucumbers, beer and sausages
Crunchy cukes:  The first cucumbers are starting to appear at the farmers’ markets.  At Coburg last weekend we saw tiny Lebanese cucumbers from Thriving Foods Farm, and spiky round Lemon cucumbers from Day’s Walk Farm. Look out for different varieties on the stalls of Somerset Heritage (at Boroondara) and Lorenzo Perito (at Riddells Creek).

Farm beers: Make the trip up to the Euroa Village Farmers’ Market to try the range of seasonal beers by the Strathbogie Brewing Company.  Their dry Cream Ale uses maize grown on the farm, while the Belgian Cherry Ale is refreshingly sour, made with cherries grown nearby in Benalla. 

Heritage pork: McIvor Farm Foods’ heritage-breed Berkshire pigs are farmed free range with a focus on regenerating the soil health.  Try the Toulouse-style sausages for a simple and flavourful addition to dinner. Pick some up at Riddells Creek this weekend.

The Brighton Farmers’ Market is the newest accredited Victorian farmers’ market to open.  Run by the experienced Community Farmers’ Markets team, the market offers a broad range of fresh and value-added food from genuine farmers and producers.  Stock up on beef from Miramonte Farm and dairy from Tarago Organics.  There are in-season vegetables from market gardeners the Farandas, and delicious bread from Elwood Sourdough. Early lunch could be fresh hot pastries from Ummu Gozleme, and sip on a coffee or kombucha to go with it.
