direct from our farmers this week:
pork, onions and oranges

Free range pork: The free-range farm-bred pork from Happy Valley Free Range in Gippsland is delicious.  Australian pork producers are doing it tough and farmer Jo says smaller producers are no exception.  Support the local food system to thrive - catch up with her at Coburg this Saturday.

Red spring onion: Ruby-shanked red spring onions are in abundance from Peninsula Fresh Organics at the moment.  Pick up a bundle or two – they’re great grilled or added fresh to salads and noodles.  Look out for them at Coburg, Boroondara and Eltham.

Deep red orange: The short season for blood oranges is just starting, so it’s time to enjoy juices, salads and just peeling and eating them for a sweet citrus hit.  Doron Talmi will have them alongside his mandarins at Boroondara, Alphington and Flemington.

Three Delicious Award winners will be at the Castlemaine Farmers’ Market this weekend.  Pick up French green lentils from Burrum Biodynamics to braise with olives and oil from Barfold Olives.  Combine them with top-quality beef from Warialda Belted Galloway and there’s a Sunday dinner fit for Fathers’ Day celebrations. There’s music, food-focused discussions and strong support from the local community, making this a great market to visit in regional Victoria.  (The Castlemaine Artists Market is just across the road, too.)
