Our member-designed accreditation program underpins our promise that you're supporting genuine farmers and producers when you shop at accredited farmers' markets. Look out for the accreditation signs at markets and on stalls (it's a little harder to spot this week).

news from across our network:
a film screening, an invitation to get involved, and a story

The Castlemaine Farmers' Market is getting ready to launch a new weekly market and they're holding a film screening fundraiser after the regular Sunday market, 02 Nov at the Theatre Royal in Castlemaine. The documentary, In Our Hands, explores food sovereignty in the UK, and is the story of farmers who, through hope, hard-graft and sheer bloody mindedness are refusing to be victims of history.

Applications close on October 13, 2019.
This week we heard this story from farmer Claire :

"For over a year a lady called Sophie has been buying our eggs. She lives in Altona. Every weekend so goes to the farmers markets and chats with the stall holders. As I got to know her I asked her why she drives all the way to Lancefield, there must be closer markets? She said her husband died and she had no one to speak to in the city. No one stops to chat with her, but if she goes to the farmer's markets and asks a farmer about their farm they will chat with her for hours. So now that is how she spends her weekends. With her friends the farmers. She hugs the kids, brings recipes that she thinks I might like, cuts pictures of us out of the paper."

Anyone else feel strong connections with the people they meet at the markets?  Drop us a line - good news is always welcome!

direct from our producers this week:
Spring herbs, Spring seedlings and Swiss browns

Swiss browns: Sugarloaf Produce is currently producing bumper harvests of Swiss Brown mushrooms on their mixed-crop family farm in Strathewen.  Harvested for the weekly Eltham Farmers’ Market, they have great texture and flavour and keep for ages in the fridge

Healthy herbs: Spring herbs are great for invigoration and health according to Dragi from MKD Services.  Excellent eaten fresh, they also add tang and colour to nourishing soups.  Buy some freshly-picked bunches at Kyneton and Eltham this weekend.

Spring seedlings: Urban market garden enterprise Kabuu grows seedlings and microgreens to bring to nearby Eltham farmers’ market every Sunday.  Buy the sprouts cut to order or take home a tray of microgreens or seedlings to grow your own.
