castlemaine adds a weekly wednesday farmers' market!

The Castlemaine Farmers Market has teamed up with the Harcourt Organic Farming Co-op to create a weekly, ‘shopping basics’ farmers market, stocking local produce from within or close to Mount Alexander Shire, held every Wednesday from 3.30-6.30 pm.  The established, monthly market in the carpark will remain the same.

Their first market was yesterday and it was a cracker!

Castlemaine Weekly Farmers' Market
Every Wednesday from 3.30-6.30 pm

Held on the closed part of Frederick Street (the grass verge between the Historic Market Building and Castlemaine RSL).

direct from our farmers this week:
green mallee honey, new season garlic, and local lamb

Green Mallee Honey:  When I passed through Kyneton Farmers' Market last month, Rob from Bush Track Bees was selling buckets of Green Mallee Honey, which I've never tried before.  The honey is light and runny because it was produced during early, wet Spring.  It's sweet but finishes with an incredible toasty buttery flavour - hopefully Rob has some left for Kyneton again this Saturday!

Early harvest garlic: Day's Walk Farm harvested their crop of garlic just in time to beat the rains late last week.  Their cloves are fully-formed, so they can be used now or cured for later (ask Paul how), but the stems are still green enough to slice up and cook with too.  Find them at Coburg on Saturday.

Local lamb: Fellcroft Farm Lamb are also regulars at Kyneton - it's one of their closest local markets.  Catch up with them for the cuts that take your fancy and ask about their on-farm BnB project while you're there!

Head out to historic Bendigo today to taste fresh produce from across the region at the Bendigo Community Farmers’ Market, where it’s all about the flavour.  Buy a super fresh chicken to roast from Yapunyah Meadow-Grazed Poultry. Pick up a bag of local walnuts or some walnut biscuits from Husk and Harvest and stock up on pastured free-range eggs from the young family at the Good Life Farm Company. There are seats under the trees and live music, so take your time and enjoy the visit.
