top tips, tasty tomatoes, local vinegar

Inside tips: Farmers’ markets allow us to spend time talking to farmers about their produce and how they cook it.  Miramonte Farm happily shares techniques best-suited to their specialty cuts, whether slow-cooked short ribs or quick and lean flat-iron steaks are on the menu. Get some tips at Bendigo Midweek, Eltham or Flemington this week.
Taste test: While it seems counterintuitive to buy tomatoes in winter, the greenhouse-grown tomatoes being harvested by Ross Tomatoes are selected for their outstanding flavour in cooler conditions.  Their chocolate-brown tomatoes with a savoury, smoky flavour are exceptional at the moment.  Take home a bag from Eltham.
Lengthy payoff: New to the Lisadurne Hill stall are bottles of their mosto cotto and classic balsamic vinegar.  Made from their estate-grown trebbiano grapes, the mosto cotto is sweet and sticky, while the classic balsamic has the sharpness needed for great salad dressings. The vinegar has been aged in a series of oak barrels over the past 8 years, and the growers are understandably proud of the result.  Try the two at Coburg or Flemington.

The weekly Eltham Farmers’ Market is one of the best authentic farmers’ markets in Victoria. The market is also well known for its sustainability initiatives including a recent move to offset the carbon emissions of its stallholders. So this weekend visit Eltham town centre and enjoy a great range of fresh, local AND low carbon food shopping!

Some of the market’s regular stallholders will include some amazingly good apples from Apted’s Orchards and biodynamic Kiwi fruit from Beenak Farm. The choice of veg is one of the best you will find anywhere with stallholders including: Mount Prospect Farm, Peninsula Fresh Organics, Sugarloaf Produce, Thriving Foods Farm and Silvertine Farm.

Once your bags are full, enjoy the live music with great coffee from Yarra Coffee accompanied by a variety of brunch options.
