This coming week marks the winter solstice, the longest night of the year and a special time celebrated by many cultures around the world. Winter festivals frequently incorporate feasting and light. Think Christmas, Hanukkah, Dongzhi and others about which you can read more here.

As an immigrant country, most Australian migrants hail from the Northern Hemisphere and our holiday traditions reflect a disconnection with place. Shouldn't we begin to connect with our place here, to put roots down, understand and celebrate our seasons?

Connecting with landscape has always meant eating from it. Small-scale, seasonal food production reflects time and place. What better way to mark the winter solstice than celebrating with fresh produce from a VFMA accredited farmers' market? And maybe a piece of O'Callaghan's Irish Fruit Cake as well! This week at Malmsbury Village Farmers' Market.

Don't forget your bags and mask and have a great weekend!
