root vegetables and sausages

Unusual tubers: Bellellen Grampians Organics are harvesting yacon at the moment.  The tuber is crisp, tastes a little like pear, and works well raw in winter salads with citrus dressings.  They’ll be at Gasworks.

Punchy horseradish: Fresh horseradish is delicious in salad dressings and cream sauces, but grating it releases extremely potent, mustardy vapours, so Chloe from Somerset Heritage Produce recommends freezing the roots first. Her harvest is just starting; find her at Boroondara.
Slow sausages: McIvor Farm Foods use some of their pork to make fresh Toulouse-style sausages seasoned simply with salt and pepper. Pan-fry them slowly to keep them juicy.  Pick some up at Riddells Creek.

This weekend marks just over a year since Coburg Farmers’ Market moved from Coburg North to the site behind the corner of Bell St and Sydney Rd.  The market runs weekly but the third Saturday here always has a lot of stallholders, so it’s a great day to visit. Pick up organic milk, cream and butter from Schulz – they’ll have their milk in glass bottles too.  Catch up with beekeepers Crafted By Bees and foragers Melbourne Pine Mushrooms.   Ray-Monde Deux will have their beef, goat, and wonderful wine on tap, and don’t miss City Larder’s quiches.  Finally grab lunch or a late breakfast from Kimu Korean-Japanese Eatery – their vegetarian bibimbap will warm you up!
