Lots of strawberries are grown in Australia and the commercial industry is geared towards delivery of a reliable, year-round supply. Crops are sourced from across the country: overlapping jigsaw pieces.

Like so many fruits, when you're aiming at national distribution and plugging supply chain gaps, you choose varieties that are best suited to travel. As we know, many of the strawberries you buy throughout the year are flavourless, with white or green shoulders, no fragrance and the texture of an apple.

But come spring and summer, what could be more wonderful than fresh, local, Victorian strawberries? Look around you in your local VFMA market this week!

When they're grown and picked just up the road, the varieties grown are selected for flavour, not rough handling. When they're picked carefully by the person who's proudly selling them to you, they're going to be handled gently.

Ask Sennsational Berries' Cathy Senn, daughter Natalie and great-nephew Owen! Ask Benny's Berries' Maria D'Angelo! Ask Angela Spirli from Spirli Strawberries or one of our many other fantastic berry growers! Has it been worth the wait? You bet it has!

In a VFMA farmers' market, each berry is the work of the person you deal with! Ask them what variety they're selling today, which they like best and how they're picked and handled. Real growers are proud of the work they do and happy to tell you. How great is that?
