Newly-accredited Malmsbury Village Farmers’ Market is an authentic, community based farmers market, giving preference to local producers, managed by experienced manager Meggs Hannes. the journey to refillables:

an update from barrow olives

At their farmers market stalls, Barrow Olives supply and refill stainless steel vacuum flasks with their premium quality early harvest extra virgin olive oil. They can also refill flasks with their pressed (agrumato) garlic, chilli, lime, mandarin and lemon olive oil where they crush local fruit with the olives before pressing.

Graham Barrow has been producing award-winning, single variety premium olive oil on his grove near Swan Hill for more than 25 years and has been searching for an affordable, multi-purpose, non-contaminating container that was easy to clean and refill and maintains oil quality by protecting it from light, heat and oxygen.

He selected this stainless steel, vacuum flask normally used for hot and cold drinks. We fill them at our market stalls and customers can return them later for a refill either in the returned flask if it is clean, or in a replacement flask. The flask is ideal for storage, especially in hot climates, as it keeps the oil cool, preserving its quality. And don’t forget you can always reuse your flask for hot and cold drinks if you can’t make it back for a refill,  or recycle it to the op-shop.

Graham's stall can be found at the Flemington Farmers market on the 2nd Sunday of the month, Elwood Farmers Market on the 2nd Saturday of the month and Swan Hill Farmers Market on the 1st Sunday of the month.

direct from our farmers this week:
strawflowers, lions manes and baby carrots

Local flowers: Baxter flower farmers The Original Virgin Flowers grow a wide range of flowers under cover on the Mornington Peninsula.  Their cream and pink strawflowers are just coming on and they’ll last for ages in a vase. Assemble a colourful mixed bouquet at Berwick and Alphington this weekend.

Lion’s manes: Shaggy ivory-coloured Lion’s Mane mushrooms have a solid texture and strong savory flavour.  Sliced thickly and pan-fried, a touch of butter is all it takes to caramelise the edges for simple delicious supper.  Melbourne Gourmet Mushrooms will be at Coburg and Alphington this weekend.

Baby carrots: Market gardeners Mossy Willow Farm are currently harvesting flavourful baby winter carrots from their one-acre mixed-crop farm in Main Ridge.  Farmer Rachel roasts them whole, green tops and all, and then turns them into soup.  Pick up a bunch at Alphington.
