Portarlington Paella: Fresh mussels and wakame, both harvested in the waters off Portarlington, star in the massive paella that Mike’s Mussels prepares for lunch at the University of Melbourne farmers’ market. The mussels and dried wakame are also for sale to take home and cook up – just ask while you’re still at the head of the queue.
Late harvest: Carlsruhe Fresh Produce in the Macedon Ranges is having a late season this year. Their European cucumbers which are similar in taste to crystal apple cucumbers are still producing, and their sugar plums are also still going. Catch up with this hardworking couple of farmers at Kyneton on Saturday.
Fresh Fujis: Gary and Heather from Pollards say apples should be treated like milk – keep them cold to keep their flavor. Buying them direct from the farmer means they’re not out of the cold for long before they’re yours. Fuji apples are being harvested now and they expect to start picking Pink Ladies at the end of April. Find them at Bendigo this Saturday.
