Well well, it's winter!
Frosty mornings and sunny days bring delicious flavours to enhance your market shopping experience and your meals.
Smoked chicken breasts and other meats, celeriac and radicchio join silverbeet, beetroots, carrots, parsnips, broccoli and caulis, Brussels sprouts, lentils and much more to be discovered. All from our accredited producers at our VFMA-accredited "legit" farmers' markets, where you buy from the producer. Who said winter was thin on ingredients? Not in our market network.
Just when everyone's worrying about food shortages and supply chain problems, farmers' markets provide seasonal, delicious and varied ingredients for you to enjoy spending time in the kitchen.
In a recent Guardian article about food insecurity issues now facing many countries, George Monbiot notes the increasing concentration of ownership and power right through the food system, in seeds and chemical inputs, farm machinery, finances, distribution and retail. He writes: "We urgently need to diversity global food production, both geographically and in terms of crops and farming techniques. We need to break the grip of massive [food] corporations. We need to create backup systems, producing food by entirely different means. We need to introduce spare capacity into a system threatened by its own inefficiencies."
Farmers' markets are your independent, secure and reliable source of great food, direct from the hands of Victorian growers, makers, vintners, brewers and butchers at our markets! See you this week!
