Supporting farmers and food businesses this weekend

Most of our accredited Victorian farmers' markets are running this weekend, and they've all introduced measures to increase social distancing and minimise contact!  They're such a proactive community, all so committed to keeping you healthy and connected to your food producers.  Check out the facebook page of your local market before you attend and make sure you know what their guidelines are for shopping there this weekend!

The full list of markets on this weekend is at the end of this newsletter.

Direct from the farms

Heaps of beans and bulk tomatoes

Saucing time: Local ripe tomatoes are hitting peak season now.  There are a few simple ways to preserve the glut, even if friends and family can’t get together for a saucing day just now.  Look out for bulk sauce tomatoes in 10 kilo boxes from the vegetable farmers at Abbotsford (relocated to Alphington Food Hub), Bentleigh and Elwood markets.
Fresh beans: The tumbled colours of fresh beans from Day’s Walk Farm are a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. Buttery yellow, striking purple and emerald green beans will be on their stall at Coburg farmers’ market on Saturday. Try them cooked till tender in salted water and then tossed with warm garlic-infused butter or olive oil.

Woodstock Flour

Episode 6: Rose Street Pantry - the TV series
On this week’s episode of @rosestreetpantry we meet Ian and Courtney from @woodstockflour A young couple making us rethink the way we view the humble bag of flour. Established in 2016 Woodstock Flour has a focus on wholegrain, stoneground flours from grain grown on Ian’s family farm ‘Woodstock’ in Berrigan, NSW.
Woodstock has been in Ian’s family for four generations and has been Certified Organic for 24 years. The farm integrates sheep, cattle and various crops on a beautiful 2000 acre property in the Southern Riverina.
Ian and Courtney both wanted to work on the land and saw farming as a means for environmental restoration and community building. They also saw an opportunity to provide their community with fresh flour of known provenance, which wasn’t common at the time.
After testing the waters with a small bench top
flour mill at farmers markets, they imported a New American Stone Mill in early 2018 and have since been supplying freshly milled flour to bakeries, restaurants, shops and families in their local region and across Victoria! Thanks to our sponsor @nasaaorganic and partners @melbournefarmersmarkets @vicfarmersmarkets for all of their support x
