Saucing time: Local ripe tomatoes are hitting peak season now. There are a few simple ways to preserve the glut, even if friends and family can’t get together for a saucing day just now. Look out for bulk sauce tomatoes in 10 kilo boxes from the vegetable farmers at Abbotsford (relocated to Alphington Food Hub), Bentleigh and Elwood markets.
Fresh beans: The tumbled colours of fresh beans from Day’s Walk Farm are a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. Buttery yellow, striking purple and emerald green beans will be on their stall at Coburg farmers’ market on Saturday. Try them cooked till tender in salted water and then tossed with warm garlic-infused butter or olive oil.
