cauliflowers, chestnuts & casseroles

Compact Caulis: With the weather cooling down, cauliflowers are looking beautiful with tightly furled florets, whether white, purple or green. Pull out trusted winter recipes or try new techniques like blitzing into grains to cook like couscous.  Pick up caulis from the Farandas at Elwood and Collingwood.

Roasted Chestnuts: Chestnuts are in season and Catkin Grove will be at Collingwood selling their George Sands and possibly some April Gold varieties.  Pick up a bag, either freshly roasted (with no additives) or raw in the shell to cook at home.

Braising beef: Boundary Road Beef will be at Elwood on Saturday with their grass-fed beef - they’ve had enough rainfall to maintain grass this season.  Their popular diced beef packs include both blade and chuck and come highly recommended by John the farmer for braising in pies or casseroles.

The fortnightly Farmers’ Market at The Old Cheese Factory in Berwick is held in the gardens of a local farming property that also has a children’s playground.  Pick up seasonal vegetables from Leaf Horticulture and choose quick or slow-cooking cuts from Happy Valley Free Range Pork to go with them.  Try combining mandarins from Doron Talmi, some crumbly cheese from Blue Bay Cheese and new season walnuts from Otway walnuts in a winter salad.  For lunch after the market, Gourmet Pies have twenty varieties to choose from.  The market runs on the 2nd and 4th Saturday to give locals a regular supply of fresh and seasonal produce direct from the farmers.
