Direct from the farmers

Peppers, berries and rhubarb

Fresh peppers: Tasty shishito and padron peppers grown on the Mornington Peninsula by 280 Fresh Veg will be on sale at Mt Eliza this weekend.  Try grilling them to eat fresh and drying some for winter dishes too.

Summer berries: Catch up with family farmers Sunny Creek Organic at Bentleigh this weekend for their latest harvest of strawberries and ripe red and gold raspberries.  Pick up a pot of their berry jam to extend the berry season in the pantry!

Rich rhubarb: Leggy ruby and green rhubarb is in season and can be found on many farmers’ stands this weekend.  While the weather’s warm, try simmering it with sugar and straining it to make a stunning, tangy syrup for sodas and cocktails.

Matt from Melbourne Gourmet Mushrooms

Episode 1: Rose Street Pantry - the TVseries
At 2pm this Sunday, February 23, the first episode of Rose Street Pantry the TV series will go to air on Channel 31.
Tom Carr and Meridith Stevens have produced a 6 part TV series highlighting the work of some of our primary producers. Rose Street Pantry will introduce audiences to some of the country’s most celebrated food producers and farmers. It’s about reconnecting people and communities to real food sources, while educating them on what goes into the foods they eat and how those foods are produced.

Episode 1 will feature Matt from Melbourne Gourmet Mushrooms (pictured, above).  In 2018 Matt quit his job in sales and started growing gourmet mushrooms full time from his three car garage in Melbourne’s inner north.  Completely self-taught Matt now supplies various farmer’s markets, a gourmet grocer and the occasional restaurant with a variety of shiitake, lions mane and oyster mushrooms.

Each episode will air on Sunday at 2pm with encore episodes throughout the week.  We hope you can tune in and support this initiative.
