world bee day celebration at alphington: sunday

Did you know that one in every three bites of food requires pollination? World Bee Day highlights the vital role that bees play in our food production and ecosystem, and their serious decline. This Sunday, Alphington Farmers Market is hosting local experts Pollinator Alliance, The Practical Beekeeper and Heidi Honey to inform, guide and inspire you into discovering the wonderful world of bees. Learn how to create your own native bee hotel with Katrina from Buzz & Dig and then stock up at this weekly market full of fresh local, produce direct from the farmers and makers.

soups, shrubs and spring bulbs

Mixed farming: Young family farmers Sugarloaf Produce will have summer and autumn crops at Eltham on Sunday.  Roast up a combination of Red Kuri pumpkins, creamy Jersualem artichokes and white mushrooms and enjoy as-is or pureed into soup.

Citrus shrubs: Market newcomers Botanical Brew set aside some of their mandarin and finger lime jun (similar to kombucha) for a longer fermentation that produces a refreshing vinegar shrub, great in mocktails and cocktails.  They only sell the shrub at farmers’ markets – catch up with them at Gasworks and Alphington.

Planning daffodils:  It’s time to plant daffodil and jonquil bulbs! Club Creek Bulb Farm will have a selection of their 120 varieties for sale at Boroondara this Saturday – they’ll be back again in late July with lilliums and other spring flowers and bulbs.

The Euroa Village Farmers' Market connects regional Strathbogie producers with the local community.  Catch up with local beef farmers Miramonte Farm for their fresh and ready-to-eat products, including the popular rare roast beef.  Choose from a wide range of locally brewed beers, many made with crops from the region, from the Strathbogie Brewing Company.  Take advantage of the nearby parking to stock up on tins of local olive oil from Lisadurne Hill Olive Oil.  The market barbecue stall is an important fundraiser, so visitors can grab a bite to eat and support local groups at the same time!
