Towerside MSP Innovation District News & Updates
View this email in your browser
Hello Jim,

In February, we committed to staying more closely connected to you and all of the partners and stakeholders who have been working to make this district a thriving and equitable urban community. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share with us their perspective and input on the future of Towerside. The Steering Committee is looking forward to reaching all of you individually over the coming weeks.

Moving forward the Towerside Steering Committee will be sending you a twice monthly email update including a project status dashboard, upcoming meetings and events, district news, and more. I hope this is just the beginning of a more closely connected partnership collaborating to achieve our shared values and vision - especially as the depth, breadth, and complexity of our important work together in this area only continues to grow. I am always reminded that what we do here today will impact the Minneapolis - Saint Paul region for the next one hundred years.

Finally, I am pleased to invite you to attend the first meeting of the new Towerside entity on Tuesday April 11th from 8:30-10:30am at the new Sunrise Banks Headquarters, 2525 Wabash Ave, Saint Paul.

Thank you,
Alan Arthur

Project Dashboard
Towerside is on it's way to becoming a 501(c)3 entity with a Board of Directors. This is a critical step in maturing our governance, leadership, and financial capacities. As we work towards the next phase of this organization the Steering Committee has engaged the Cornerstone Group as implementation staff to support the ongoing work of district projects and initiatives.
The Rise started discharging stormwater into the District Stormwater Park in January. A final section of conveyance pipe along the south side of 4th street will be installed this spring, marking the end of construction for the district stormwater treatment system. A temporary reuse pump will be installed in the spring to provide water for the community gardens in 2017. The MWMO is now starting to work with the Wall Development Companies on a Towerside Phase II District Stormwater system.
Community Engagement
The opportunity for people of all backgrounds to define the nature of their urban environment is a profound innovation in planning and development. The Steering Committee is beginning to outline the ways Towerside's vision, values, and projects can be more closely connected to and enriched by Prospect Park and Saint Anthony Park resident participation.
Green Fourth Street
The City of Minneapolis is moving forward with the standard reconstruction of 4th Street SE for 2017. The above standard enhancement project designed through partner and neighborhood visioning is being prepared for bidding. Utility work is being coordinated and additional funds are being sought to ensure that Green Fourth is the critical public space and urban connector it was envisioned to be.
Signature Green Space
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is working with property owners to reach an MOU for the development of a signature district green space at the corner of 29th Avenue and 4th Street SE. Grant funding from Enterprise Community Partners will support community engagement and visioning to support and supplement the MPRB process.
Masterplan Framework
Currently, there are multiple groups making planning and design decisions regarding the Towerside District and adjacent properties. There is a need for coordination among these efforts to ensure that conflicts are resolved efficiently in order to maximize resources, unlock maximum value for the district, and preserve opportunities to achieve the shared vision. The Minnesota Design Center (MDC) will work with the Towerside Steering Committee and new Board of Directors to develop a shared Framework for Planning and Implementation for the District. Phase 1 will define the scope of work and include an initial facilitated workshop. Phase 2 will result in an updated physical plan and implementation approach.

Towerside is a new century nexus for people to live, work, learn, research, explore and engage. It represents a new way of thinking about a significant area of underdeveloped land in the heart of the Minneapolis/Saint Paul metropolitan region. It is a rich mix of people, spaces, places and activities supported by a district-wide network of innovative services and systems.
