Raising Awareness                   Taking Action
(This RAG is not an agency of or controlled by, Rotary International)
Dear <<First Name>>

Welcome to our first 2019 edition.

Robyn and I have just returned from having our eyes opened on the Slavery Awareness Tour to Cambodia and Thailand in partnership with STOP THE TRAFFIK Australia. In both Phnom Penh and Bangkok we were exposed to the causes and consequences of exploitation and slavery as well as meeting some remarkable people doing great work to help those who were at risk of, or had been trafficked. A very worthwhile experience which we would recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about modern slavery first-hand.

The weekend after our return was the Victorian Multi-District Rotary Conference at which a keynote speaker was Grace Forrest, Co-Founder and Director of the Walk Free Foundation and the United Nations Association of Australia’s Goodwill Ambassador for Anti-Slavery. Watch her presentation below.

RAGAS and the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central’s Operation End Slavery project shared a stand in the Rotary Showcase which was visited by many delegates and many good conversations were had and connections made.

Please make use of our new local RAGAS flyer for raising awareness of Modern Slavery in your Rotary network.  It is downloadable here.

Finally, we have included some items from Focus on the Family and Stop the Traffik which provide ways to educate our young people about modern slavery, and some suggested ways you or your Rotary Club can support the work of non-government organisations (NGOs) through child sponsorship and / or end slavery projects. There are, of course, many other NGOs also doing great work, so the main message is, whichever is your preferred organization, please DO SOMETHING to help prevent more people, young and not so young, from being caught up in this cruel dehumanising practice and have a life with a future.

Sex Trafficking: A Parents Guide to Protecting Your Child

From Focus on the Family, USA.
As this series of articles documents, sex trafficking is not a third-world problem affecting other countries.  This is a serious and growing problem right in our backyards and happening on Main Street, U.S.A. (and Australia).  Read here.

Includes useful case studies as conversation starters with your pre-teen & early teenagers.          Warning: these stories may be confronting.
