Dear Friends
The eagerly awaited report "Hidden in Plain Sight", by the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade’s Inquiry into establishing a Modern Slavery Act in Australia was released on Thursday 7th December.
In summary, it recommends:
The development of a Modern Slavery Act
Appointment of an independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner
Larger companies be required to eliminate forced labour and trafficking in supply chains
This is a very positive and encouraging first step towards eliminating this abominable practice in Australia. We await the drafting of the legislation with anticipation that it will be strong and effective. There are links to the report as well as to press releases and press reports in this Newsletter.
Robyn and I thank all RAGAS supporters for your dedication and passion to end modern slavery, and wish you a safe and peaceful Christmas, with a reminder that, as we purchase gifts for family and friends this festive season, we need to be ever more vigilant to purchase only items that we are reasonably confident have been produced ethically.
