Happy new year!
It's that time again to set resolutions, goals and unrealistic expectations for ourselves. Consider this your gentle reminder to take it easy on yourself. Progress takes time and consistency. You won't see results overnight and you'll probably derail a few times before finding a way to stay on track and that's okay.
These two paintings are from seven years ago when I became obsessed with wood grain and I started adding portraits into my narrative.
Artemis. 2015. Oil on Wood.

Self Portrait. 2014. Oil on Wood.
After many years of trial and error, experiments and failures, procrastination and side quests I continuously gained experience and over time my skills improved. Not only that but my style evolved with every step of the way.

Patterns in Motion. 2021. Watercolour on Paper.

Grounded. 2021. Oil on Wood.
Introspectator. 2021. Acrylic on Canvas.
Evolution is slow and we're a species that craves instant gratification. We tend to focus so hard on the end game that we forget to enjoy the journey there, we get sidetracked, we get discouraged, we give up. If anyone can understand the frustration and tedium of watching progress move at a glacial pace, it's a self employed artist. It would be rad if our reality consisted of supercuts and montages that fast forward through the boring bits of achieving goals. Alas, our linear time insists that we take the scenic route.
So have patience with yourself and trust the process. Some days will feel amazing, some days will suck, but if you can find your way back to the path you'll eventually get to your destination. Just don't forget to enjoy the journey there.
Until next time,
may the creative force be with you.
