VOLUME 2   ISSUE 3
ON THE HILL
Last week we began sitting in the House of Commons for the first time in 2017. It has been great to be back; I have already been busy with meetings, listening to debates and attending Canadian Heritage Committee meetings.

Last week sadly began with tragedy in Quebec City.  My condolences to the Muslim community in Quebec, as well as the Muslim community across Canada. As an MP, I and my colleagues are reminded that we must continue to be the voice for all Canadians in the House of Commons.

Two notable events last week were the Prime minster backtracking on his campaign promise of political reform, changing our voting system, citing no clear consensus on the issue.  Had they held a referendum, as we had suggested, they would have at least made an attempt at consensus.  Our Conservative Party is also fighting to not have the government tax your health benefits.

Netha Dyck is the third recipient of the Saskatoon-Grasswood Canada 150 Citizen Award!  Continue reading below to see what Netha has done for our community, and watch a short clip of her accepting the award.

As always, feel free to call or stop by my office if you think we can be of any assistance.

CELEBRATE NATIONAL FLAG OF CANADA DAY
FEBRUARY 15TH
Take part in the "Share Your Moment with the Flag Challenge" by posting a picture or video of you with the flag and inspire others to do the same #canadianflag
In February, volunteer canvassers will be knocking on the doors of Canadians to share life-saving information and raise funds to help protect you and your family from heart disease and stroke.  Dr. Roberta Bondar, honorary chair and Canada's first woman astronaut and a neurologist is encouraging Canadians to give generously to one of Canada's oldest fundraising traditions.   Every dollar you raise, every person you reach, and every heart you inspire helps save lives and support families in your own community, and across Canada.  To donate or volunteer please go to:  http://www.heartandstroke.ca/get-involved.  Make a difference in your community!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Every February Canadians mark Black History Month, a celebration of the remarkable achievements of Black Canadians and the contributions they have made to our country.  For example, Viola Desmond, a Nova-Scotia businesswoman, changed the course of Canadian history by refusing to leave the white only area of a movie theatre in 1946.  In tribute to her impact on the human rights and freedoms movement, the Government of Canada recently chose her as the face for Canada's ten-dollar bank note.  To find out more information please go to:  https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/campaigns/black-history-month.html

HERITAGE IN THE COMMUNITY
HOPKINS HOUSE
307 SASKATCHEWAN CRESCENT WEST
Built in 1910 for the then Mayor William Hopkins and designed by Architect David Webster.  The house took 2 years to build and cost $50,000.  Joseph and Thomas Isherwood bought the house in 1937 and converted the home to four suites. (Evergreen Lodge).  In 1960 it was purchased by a Catholic religious order and known as De Mazenod Hall.  Then in 1982 Adrienne Frame purchased the house and did some extensive renovations.  The late Dr. Jim Underhill purchased the home in 1989 and his wife Jenny resides there today.  Truly one of Saskatoon's most grand and opulent homes!
