VOLUME 1 ISSUE 14
ON THE HILL
Last week, my Private Members' Bill had second reading in the House of Commons. Debate took place on Monday and I fought to get the Government to see the importance of this bill. Unfortunately, my bill was defeated last Wednesday.  I would like to thank all of the opposition members who voted in support of my Bill, as well as the many individuals from schools, school boards, and school authorities across Canada who offered letters of support. This will not be the end and I will continue to advocate for schools across Canada. Please see the video below for more information.

During this past week I met with several important community leaders, including representatives from the Canadian Pharmacist Association, the Saskatoon Region Association of Realtors, and the Saskatchewan Credit Unions. It was great to meet with diverse groups of individuals and learn about their many contributions to their communities and Canada.

Please continue reading the newsletter for more on what's going on in Ottawa, as well as some exciting news from our community.

CONSULTATION ON NATIONAL SECURITY
The Government has a dual responsibility when it comes to national security:
1.  To keep Canadians safe, at home and abroad.
2.  To preserve and protect the rights and freedoms which shape our open,
      inclusive, and democratic country.

The Government wants to hear your opinions and ideas on how to continue to fulfill this dual responsibility in a world of uncertainty, risk, and rapid change.

Input from Canadians is being collected online and through in-person events across the country.

The Government will accept online input until December 1, 2016.

FORT SAN
FORT QU'APPELLE SANITORIUM
Image taken from:  www.vanishedcompass.com
Fort San is located in the Qu'Appelle Valley.  Fort San opened in 1917 to fight the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic that was sweeping across the province.  It was a self-sufficient institution with vegetable gardens, livestock, a power house and a library.  Many people died at Fort San and thousands suffered.  Isolation, loneliness and pain were a way of life.

After TB became less of a threat in the early 60's, the sanatorium was changed to house the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts in 1967.  The school was closed in 1991 due to a lack of funding.  Throughout the summers during the 90's to 2004, it was the HMCS Qu'Appelle Cadet Summer Training Centre and was then converted into the Echo Valley Conference Center.

It is rumoured that Fort San is haunted by patients and former staff who died there in its early years.  The most common spirit seen is that of "Nurse Jane," a nurse who is seen moving from room to room down the hallways doing her job.
