This is the FIRST issue of the new Staff Advisory Council Newsletter! This newsletter will be sent monthly to all staff in hopes of keeping staff informed of University issues, events, and plans which may impact them or their jobs.

Did you know?
Anyone can come to the SAC meetings to hear what is discussed or to come listen to the guest speakers! Contact an SAC representative for more information if you are interested in attending a meeting. View the Upcoming Guest Speakers section for the April meeting information.

Community Service Leave Hours
The University gives all classified employees up to 16 hours of paid leave in any leave year to provide volunteer services through non-profit organizations within or outside their communities. Parents are encouraged to participate in school activities through the high school level. All employees are encouraged to volunteer through community organizations to perform direct services in child development and to provide voluntary "hands-on" services as part of an organized community service project. To learn more about your available Community Service Leave hours, check out the DHRM policy 4.40 http://www.dhrm.virginia.gov/docs/default-source/hrpolicy/pol4_40.pdf?sfvrsn=2.

Professional Development Opportunity!
Germanna Community College, the Center for Workforce & Community Education, is hosting and sponsoring a one-day Administrative Professional's Seminar on Thursday April 28, 2016 from 8:30am - 4:00pm. Those who have attended in the past rave about the experience! Each department would be responsible for their employees' registration fees, however in order to receive a discount ($75 instead of $89), at least 12 employees must attend the conference. The deadline to register is April 14th. If you have any questions please contact Susan Brown (sbrown@germanna.edu) or Sabrina Johnson (sjohnson@umw.edu) for more information on the Seminar and how to register!

Excellent Eagle Employee: April 2016

Congratulations to Dei Bayer as the Excellent Eagle Employee for April! The award for this honor is a designated parking space for the month.

In nominating Dei, her champion wrote: "Dei works tirelessly to keep the Talley Center running smoothly, functioning in multiple roles within this center.  She is our office manager, meaning that she manages all purchasing, orders, coordinates travel, arranges trainings, makes arrangements for visiting professionals, and much more.  She does all of this on a highly limited budget, using networking skills and frugal spending to get us all we need to
run the office within the confines of few resources.  She is also our only front office staff, meaning that she is the first point of contact for all incoming students, parents, faculty, staff, and community providers who reach out to the Talley Center for support or assistance.  On top of this, she single handedly manages 12 to 11 different schedules simultaneously, keeping us all coordinated.  She also helps to problem solve any IT or technical concerns, and keeps our systems up-to-date and sometimes outdated equipment running and functional.  She routinely works longer than she has to getting all of this and more done for our center.  For that, I feel that she deserves recognition!"

If you would like to nominate someone for the Excellent Eagle Employee award, send an email to eenominations@umw.edu with Excellent Eagle Employee in the Subject Line. Be sure to provide the person’s name, department, and work location with the most convenient parking lot, and the reason they should be recognized.
Guest Speaker: March 2016
Michelle Crow Dolby, Education and Communications Manager, Gari Melchers Home and Studio

Gari Melchers (1860-1932) was a commercially successful American artist who enjoyed an international reputation as one of the best figure painters of his era. Melchers and his wife Corinne purchased Belmont in 1916.

The estate served as an inspirational retreat from their travels and hectic life in New York City.  Today the 28-acre museum features a historic house museum, art studio and galleries, restored gardens, museum shop, and woodland trails. Gari Melchers Home & Studio is one of the best preserved artist homes and studios in America.

Belmont’s 5th Annual Beeping Egg Hunt took place on Sunday, March 20th. This event is for visually impaired children and their families. Families enjoyed an audible egg hunt, miniature petting zoo, Touch a Tractor, and activities in the art gallery.
