SAC December 2016 Meeting & January 2017 Retreat

January SAC Retreat Speakers:
Dr. Troy Paino, President of University of Mary Washington
Dr. Kim Gower, Assistant Professor in the College of Business

In an informal setting, Dr. Paino came to speak at the January SAC Retreat at the Stafford Campus. Dr. Paino did not want to reiterate the All Campus Meeting held on January 19th, and instead asked the SAC for comments, questions, and concerns. Key topics that were discussed include: The SAC will speak on behalf of staff to the BOV in a monthly written report and annual presentation for the BOV to hear directly about staff concerns, the main contributions that SAC can provide to the University is to promote the message of serving and preparing students and for all members to be connected to the University's mission, the intention to give a dedicated budget to the Marketing/ Web Development group instead of pulling from the Reserve funds as has been done in previous years, the goal to provide a wellness initiative to all members of the UMW community, promoting service learning and work, staff compensation, student retention and recruitment, performance evaluations, etc. Please see the SAC Retreat Meeting Minutes for a full description of topics discussed with Dr. Paino.

Dr. Kim Gower presented information about leadership to the SAC. She helped us identify obstacles that make performing the job as the SAC challenging and ways to combat those obstacles includng clear and effective communication, and focusing on getting to the heart of why people do what they do instead of the "what" to increase more engagement and participation within the UMW community.

December Guest Speakers:
Kimberley Buster-Williams, Associate Provost for Enrollment
Hall Cheshire, Chief Information Officer

Kimberley Buster-Williams discussed UMW's Strategic Enrollment Plan which drives the admissions department in the direction of recruitment. The Strategic Enrollment Plan was presented to the Board of Visitors in December 2016.

Hall Cheshire addressed the group about upcoming changes the security program will undergo. IT Auditors identified some areas of interest that need to be addressed including VPN access and Local Administrators. Additional controls will begin to be put in place starting in 2017

Thank you to all of our speakers for taking the time to talk with the SAC and help us serve the community the best we can!

Campus Recreation: Private Fitness Classes!

While there are free group fitness classes at UMW, sometimes faculty and staff are looking for a private fitness opportunity to workout together. With the Private Fitness Classes, you can work out consistently in a group of your peers while receiving personal attention from a seasoned instructor and genuine support from the group of people who are enrolled. In order for a class to run, there must be 3 people registered and paid for the class.

If you have any questions, please contact Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness, Brittanie Haas at bhaas@umw.edu.

Congratulations to January's Excellent Eagle Employee: April Peterson

Her champion, Virginia Ashley, wrote:
“April should be recognized for the work she has done providing technical solutions for the Admissions and Financial Aid offices. She has become an expert on the business of recruiting students, offering acceptance and enabling scholarship applications. Her knowledge has helped her build effective integration between Banner and other systems. She often advises these business areas of ways they can improve their processes. April has built exceptional customer relationships and always gives service with a smile.”
