Upcoming workshops and events
The National Transportation Data Challenge Launch Event will be happening May 2 - 3 in multiple locations. Register now to attend workshops, meet featured speakers, and form challenge teams! A welcome reception will be happening at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, in the WRF Data Science Studio.

Lunch for the postdocs and graduate students will be Tuesday, May 2 at noon in the WRF Data Science Studio.There will be a discussion with Meredith Lee, executive director of the West Big Data Innovation Hub.

The Reproducibility Working Group will meet on Tuesday, May 2 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Studio.

The Python in Geosciences Group will also meet on Tuesday in the Studio, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

This week's Community Seminar will feature David Fleming presenting on "A machine learns exoplanet habitability". The seminar will be on Tuesday, May 2, in the Physics/Astronomy Auditorium, room A110, at
3:30 p.m.

The eScience Executive Meeting will be on Wednesday, May, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Studio.

Ongoing: please consider donating to our food drive to benefit the Any Hungry Husky program. Food collected in the Studio through the morning of May 8.
Award winners
Three members of the eScience team received awards this week. Bingni Brunton, data science fellow, received the UW Innovation Award with partner David Gire (video). Magdalena Balazinska, senior data science fellow, has won the 2017 Test of Time Award from the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on the Management of Data. Steven Brunton, data science fellow, received the College of Engineering Faculty Award for Teaching.

UW President Ana Mari Cauce weighed in on a KUOW interview: "Skepticism is critical to science, but don't be skeptical about science itself", she said.

Director Ed Lazowska was quoted in The Seattle Times' article "Governor’s phone call impresses UW prof unsure of Seattle March for Science".

Cecilia Aragon, senior data science fellow, is one of "20 data science professors to know" on the Online Engineering Programs website.

Thaisa Way, data science fellow, wrote an opinion piece published in Crosscut titled "On Earth Day, check your privilege".

Mark Hallenbeck, senior data science fellow, was interviewed by Q13 Fox News on a monitoring system for the "Mercer mess".
