Smart cities
U.S. Representative Suzan DelBene, UW President Ana Mari Cauce, eScience Institute Founding Director Ed Lazowska, Former Associate Director Bill Howe, and other community leaders met at the eScience Institute this week to discuss ways that technology can improve metropolitan areas. Vehicle cruising
Research done by the vehicle cruising team of this summer's DSSG program was referenced in an editorial by Seattle Weekly titled "Don’t abandon visions for a denser city" and in The Stranger's piece "A quarter of Seattle drivers are searching for parking".
In the news
Michael Beyeler, postdoctoral fellow, Ariel Rokem, data scientist, and additional co-authors have a new paper published in the Journal of Neuroengineering titled "Learning to see again: biological constraints on cortical plasticity and the implications for sight restoration technologies".

Emily Kalah Gade, postdoctoral fellow, was a co-author on The Washington Post's article "Defending Obamacare, cheering President Trump, opposing animal cruelty: here’s who rallied in July and why."

Our WRF partner the Clean Energy Institute was featured on KIRO 7 News in their piece on "Solar cell printing".

Equity Modeler
One of our 2017 Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) projects was highlighted in GeekWire's feature "Can Seattle avoid Bay Area problems? Researchers using data to predict how neighborhoods will evolve".
A team of UW researchers co-led by Sham Kakade, senior data science fellow, has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to develop new algorithmic tools that will advance the state of the art in data science. Zaid Harchaoui, data science fellow, is a co-principle investigator on the project.
