Upcoming workshops and events
There will be an eScience executive meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 2 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the WRF Data Science Studio.

The postdocs and graduate students' lunch will be on Thursday, Feb. 3 in the Studio, from 12 to 1 p.m. Alex Franks will speak.

Also on Thursday, the Software Journal Club will meet in the Studio from 3 to 4 p.m.

This week's Community Seminar will feature Emilio Zagheni. It will be held in Architecture Hall, room 147, on Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Postdoctoral fellows, save the date for "An industry panel on starting companies" sponsored by The UW Institute for NeuroengineeringWednesday, Feb. 15 at 3:30 p.m. in the Husky Union Building, room 340.
Startup success
KenSci, a health care startup co-founded by Ankur Teredesai, eScience affiliate, has raised $8.5 million in funding. The platform uses data science to predict patients' future health and helps doctors in decision-making. Find a list of press coverage and more information here.
Fake news
Using data science to combat fake news has become a hot topic; this week fellow Jevin West's proposed course Calling Bull***t continued to gain news traction, and affiliate Kate Starbird was featured on Buzzfeed News and KING 5 News.

Applications for the 2017 Data Science for Social Good program are being accepted - submit now!

Ed Lazowska, founding director, and fellows Ben Marwick and Jake VanderPlas have had their letter "Academia's failure to retain data scientists" published in Science.
MetroLab workshop
The aftereffects of the MetroLab workshop, co-sponsored by the Institute, are still being considered in a variety of media outlets, found here
In the news
Rajesh Rao, senior data scientist, was quoted in The Verge, Ed Lazowska was quoted in Inside Philanthropy, Bill Howe, associate director, was interviewed by The Daily, and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation was promised $279 million.
