Upcoming workshops and events
Victor Pankratius will speak on "Computer-aided discovery: Towards scientific insight generation with machine support" at a brown-bag lunch co-sponsored by the astronomy department. The talk will be on Tuesday, Jan. 24, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in the WRF Data Science Studio.

The postdocs and grad students' lunch featuring Dave Williams will be on Thursday, Jan. 26, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Studio.

Also on Thursday the Community Seminar will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Architecture Hall, room 147. Jevin West will provide an introduction to data science.

The first Data Science Career Fair will be held Thursday, Feb. 2. Register to attend by Monday, Jan. 23.

In the news
A collaboration between Mark Hallenbeck, director of the Washington State Transportation Center, and Anat Caspi, director of the Taskar Center for Accessible Technology, both Data Science for Social Good project leads, has resulted in a $250,000 financial award from the WSDOT which allows them to continue their work.

Founding Director Ed Lazowska was interviewed by The Daily for an article titled "CSE program to double in size by 2019".
Recent happenings
The Institute has hosted Software Carpentry, an Intermediate Git/Github Tutorial, an Azure for Research workshop and seminars by Paul Ginsparg and Susan Murphy in the last two weeks.
Fellowship opportunity
IBM is currently accepting applications for its summer 2017 Social Good Fellowship Program; undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply.

Data Science for Social Good fellowship applications are now being accepted - deadline Feb. 13. Project proposals for the program accepted through Jan. 23.

New class offering
Fellow Jevin West and scientist Carl T. Bergstrom have created a new course meant to develop critical analysis, which was covered in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Follow fellow Anthony Arendt's NASA High Mountain Asia project website; the HMA supplies water to more than a billion people.
