On Wednesday, Apr. 5, Sir Philip Campbell, astrophysicist and editor-in-chief of the science journal Nature, will speak at 3:30 p.m. our Data Science Seminar in the Physics/Astronomy Auditorium, room A118. Further details on this talk will be released soon.

There will be a guest lecture by Sergiu Dascalu (Univ. of Nevada) on Monday, Apr. 3, at 3:30 p.m. in the WRF Data Science Studio. The talk will be on "Cyberinfrastructure advances for data-intensive research projects in Nevada".

Academic research award

Adrian Raftery, eScience affiliate and professor of statistics and sociology, has been awarded the St. Patrick’s Day Medal by Science Foundation Ireland. Raftery "develops new statistical methodology, with a focus on the social, environmental and health sciences" and he has worked collaboratively across a variety of disciplines.
Poster session
Students from fellow Dave Beck's Molecular/Clean Energy Data Science class and guests packed the WRF Data Science Studio Mar. 16 for an informative (and fun!) poster session.

iConference 2017
Fellow Emma Spiro and visiting scholar Zack Almquist are co-authors (with others) of the paper "Let’s workout! Exploring social exercise in an online fitness community" which is a finalist in an iConference 2017 competition.
eScience affiliate Kate Starbird has a new article out titled "Information wars: A window into the alternative media ecosystem".
Big data
Registrations for the third annual Summer Institute in Statistics for Big Data are currently being accepted; a limited number of scholarships are available.
Amazon Catalyst Fund
UW and Amazon have partnered to create the Amazon Catalyst Fund - submit applications to fund your dream project by Mar. 26.
