Upcoming workshops and events
Lunch for the postdocs and grad students will be Tuesday, May 9, from 12 to 1 p.m. in the WRF Data Science Studio. Jie Liu will be presenting.

The Community Seminar will also be on Tuesday, from 3:30 to 4:20 p.m., in the Physics/Astronomy Auditorium, room A110. Tony Cannistra will speak on "Intelligent species distribution modeling via traits and physiology".

There will be an Education Working Group meeting on Wednesday, May 10, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Studio. Participants will be finalizing the paperwork for the PhD Data Science option.

The Software Journal Club will meet Thursday, May 11, in the Studio from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

This week the Science Institute co-hosted the National Transportation Data Challenge Launch Event with the West Big Data Hub, which brought together participants to address transportation issues.
In the news
Brittany Fiore-Gartland, director of data science ethnography, recently spoke on a panel on "Retractions, replications, and reproducibility: Changes in scientific knowledge production and communication".

Affiliate Kate Starbird weighed in on a recent Facebook meme on KIRO 7 News, fake news on Northwest Now, and on Infowars on Buzzfeed.

Mark Hallenbeck, senior data scientist, was interviewed on HOT lanes on Q13 FOX News and on KIRO 7 News on congestion tolling.

The work of Carlos Guestrin, senior data science fellow, was referenced in MIT Technology Review.

Affiliate Zoran Popovic was interviewed on KOMO 4 News on his neuroscience game Mozak.

Geek of the Year
Director Ed Lazowska brought home GeekWire's 2017 Geek of the Year Award last night. He was also given special thanks in the award-winning short film Fish Out of Water.

eScience affiliate Alvin Cheung has won an NSF CAREER Award for his proposal on improving database management for real-world applications. Jeffrey Heer, senior data science fellow, is the recipient of the Association for Computer Machinery Grace Murray Hopper Award.
